A Letter from Los Angeles County Board Chair & Supervisor Hilda L. Solis
Dear Friends,
Yesterday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health received confirmation of its first case of the new COVID-19 Omicron variant. Getting vaccinated and boosted remains critical as holiday traveling and gatherings begin. The vaccines are effective against the Delta variant and earlier strains of the virus, which allows us to remain hopeful that the approved vaccines will also provide some protection against Omicron. All residents across LA County should continue following the safety regulations such as wearing mask and maintain social distance and wear a mask when indoors or at large outdoor mega events, regardless of vaccination status.
Anyone 18 and older can now get a COVID-19 booster six months after their Pfizer/Moderna vaccine and two months after receiving the J&J vaccine. To find a vaccination site near you, make an appointment at vaccination sites, and much more, visit: www.VaccinateLACounty.com (English) or www.VacunateLosAngeles.com (Spanish). However, if you or a loved one have difficulty leaving home to get vaccinated, you can request in-home vaccination by calling 2-1-1 or the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Vaccine Call Center at 833-540-0473 anytime between 8am - 8:30pm, 7 days a week. Residents can also fill out the online request form (multiple language options available) or visit the In-Home Vaccination Page (English) or In-Home Vaccination Page (Spanish) for more information. Referrals from caregivers, loved ones, organizations, agencies, providers, among others, are all welcome. For resources related to paratransit and free rides for vaccination, please call the Public Health Vaccine Call Center or visit the How To Get Vaccinated page.
Also, this was my last week as Chair of the Board of Supervisors. During the past year, I have witnessed the resiliency of our County's more than 10 million residents. As I come to the end of my tenure as Chair, I want to say how much of an honor it was to lead the County's first all-female Board of Supervisors. The County family stepped up during this time of crisis to serve our residents. For that, and much more, I sincerely thank them for their steadfast leadership.
Sincerely,
Chair Hilda L. Solis
Supervisor, First District
During my last few days as Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, I want to take this opportunity to highlight how far we have come in terms of COVID-19 vaccinations and the County’s efforts throughout the past year in this highlight reel. Check it out!
It was an honor to host U.S. Secretary of Labor Martin J. Walsh earlier this week for a roundtable discussion on the “Power of Apprenticeships — Women Building The Grand LA” to highlight the more than 60 women working in construction at The Grand LA and the role of apprenticeships.
The Grand LA is the result of a collaborative public-private partnership, guided by the Los Angeles Grand Avenue Authority, a joint powers authority comprised of LA County, the City of Los Angeles, and the former Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles. It is a great example of how President Biden’s Build Back Better Act can expand the work we're doing to provide Angelenos with strong pathways to apprenticeship programs in collaboration with local labor unions and community colleges. As a former U.S. Secretary of Labor, it was wonderful to share this experience with Secretary Walsh.
In response to the potential threat of the Omicron variant and to minimize its initial spread here in Los Angeles County, the County has partnered with the State of California to bring COVID-19 tests directly to LAX. By providing and offering rapid testing directly at the International Terminal for visitors from abroad, we can detect and quarantine any confirmed cases immediately, minimizing potential spread here in the County.
Additionally, by providing those who test negative with take-home kits, we can identify any further travelers should they develop symptoms. This is a sensible step to slow the spread of COVID-19 and its variants and provides the County more time to prepare for Omicron. With the valuable time these measures are affording us, I strongly urge residents to get vaccinated and get their booster shots. Let's keep each other safe this holiday season.
