Public Health Encourages COVID-19 Vaccination for 5-11 Year Olds
The CDC recommends that children and adolescents ages 5 and older get a COVID-19 vaccine. The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is authorized for children and adolescents ages 5 and up, as a 2-dose series taken 3 weeks apart. Each dose for children ages 5-11 is one-third of the dosage of the vaccine for older adolescents and adults.
While children and adolescents are typically at lower risk than adults of becoming severely ill or hospitalized from COVID-19, it is still possible. Since March 2020, nearly 81,000 children 5-11 years old have tested positive for COVID-19 in Los Angeles County and nearly 400 children ages 5-11 were hospitalized. Of the 996 new cases reported on Monday, November 8, 140 were among children between the ages of 5-11 years old.
Vaccination is the best way to protect children ages 5 and older from COVID-19. Vaccination has been shown to be 91% effective in preventing infection in this age group with only mild side effects. Before being authorized for children, scientists and medical experts completed their review of safety and effectiveness data from clinical trials of thousands of children. The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine was rigorously tested and reviewed, and more than 11 million adolescents ages 12-17 have already received the COVID-19 vaccine.

Under LA County’s Health Officer Order, proof of full vaccination and photo ID is now required for indoor entry into bars, breweries, wineries, distilleries, nightclubs, and lounges for all patrons and employees. Patrons need to be fully vaccinated to be indoors at any of these establishments.
The City of Los Angeles has a new vaccine verification program, called SafePassLA, which requires proof of full vaccination for entry into the indoor portions of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, breweries, wineries, gyms, spas, nail salons, barbershops, movie theaters, shopping malls, and entertainment and recreation venues. This includes indoor portions of City facilities such as LA City Hall, senior centers, recreation centers, and service centers.

California’s economy is now fully open and state travel restrictions are no longer in effect. However, COVID-19 remains a threat to our community and travelers should be fully vaccinated prior to travel. In addition, travelers are encouraged to plan ahead and get a COVID-19 booster and/or an additional dose, if eligible, before travel. Travelers should continue to take precautions to reduce the risk of COVID-19 such as masking, physical distancing, and hand hygiene. Help keep California and Los Angeles County open and our communities healthy by following the CDC travel guidelines.

Many generations often gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, so it’s important to consider each individual’s risk for COVID-19. If there are people who are not fully vaccinated and/or who are at a higher risk of getting severe disease (such as older adults and those with certain medical conditions), consider taking precautions like hosting outside, wearing masks, and getting tested before gathering. If everyone attending is fully vaccinated, the risk of the COVID-19 virus being transmitted is significantly reduced.
The safest option is to only gather in-person with members of your household and to celebrate virtually with other family and friends. Consider this option if you have loved ones who have weak immune systems or who are not fully vaccinated and are at high risk of severe COVID-19 disease.
