A Letter from Los Angeles County Board Chair & Supervisor Hilda L. Solis
Dear Friends,
The three U.S. FDA- and CDC-approved vaccines are under the most intensive vaccine safety monitoring in our nation's history. In addition, scientists and physicians, including pediatricians, obstetricians, and pregnancy experts, among others, recommend the vaccines for eligible children, teens and adults, pregnant people, older adults and those medically fragile. Studies have affirmed the vaccines’ safety, including in all stages of pregnancy, and the vaccines have been shown to have no impact on fertility in either men or women. There are many pervasive myths that continue to circulate. None of the vaccines contain the virus that causes COVID-19 in any form, and they cannot give you COVID-19.
To that end, I encourage everyone to protect one another and prevent transmission of the virus and its variants by getting those in their family who are eligible vaccinated. Now that Los Angeles County is administering the Pfizer vaccine to children 5 to 11 years old, anyone five years and older can get vaccinated for free, regardless of immigration status.
This is especially important as we head into Thanksgiving, the winter, and the holiday season. As we gather with loved ones this year, it’s important to keep ourselves and one another safe – especially those who are older or have underlying medical conditions. The best way to do that is get vaccinated. If you are 5 and above and have yet to get vaccinated, it’s important to do so as soon as possible. And if you’re eligible for your booster shot, I strongly encourage you to make an appointment to get yours ahead of the holiday season, particularly if you’re older or are medically vulnerable. We all want to be together again this holiday season, so let’s do our part to keep one another healthy and safe by getting vaccinated.
To find a vaccination site near you, make an appointment at vaccination sites, and much more, visit: www.VaccinateLACounty.com (English) or www.VacunateLosAngeles.com (Spanish). However, if you or a loved one have difficulty leaving home to get vaccinated, you can request in-home vaccination by calling 2-1-1 or the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Vaccine Call Center at 833-540-0473 anytime between 8am - 8:30pm, 7 days a week. Residents can also fill out the online request form (multiple language options available) or visit the In-Home Vaccination Page (English) or In-Home Vaccination Page (Spanish) for more information. Referrals from caregivers, loved ones, organizations, agencies, providers, among others, are all welcome. For resources related to paratransit and free rides for vaccination, please call the Public Health Vaccine Call Center or visit the How To Get Vaccinated page.
As always, feel free to reach out to my office if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Chair Hilda L. Solis
Supervisor, First District
As Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and Supervisor to the First District, I want to provide my sincere gratitude to all who have served and are still serving in our Armed Forces.
I was honored to host a Veterans Day Ceremony and Resource Fair yesterday in East Los Angeles at Eugene Arnold Obregon, named after a Korean War Veteran and Medal of Honor Recipient. On Veterans Day, we recognize the sacrifices of those who have put their lives on the line and the loved ones who stand beside them, but we also will never forget the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice and all those still serving. It is because of their sacrifice, commitment, selfishness, and courage to serve something greater than ourselves, that our communities are safe and continue to thrive.
According to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, there are about 350,000 Veterans living in the County of Los Angeles -- this makes the County of Los Angeles the home of the largest population of returning Veterans in the Nation. And as Veterans return home, they are faced with immense challenges with finding employment, housing, and other critical services such as access to health care. As Supervisor to the First District, I have and will continue to advocate for our Veterans to get them the support and resources that they not only need, but also deserve. To that end, I want to thank all of the partners who dedicated their time at our Veterans Day Ceremony and Resource Fair yesterday in East Los Angeles. From several County agencies to community-based organizations, together we assisted several Veterans with mental health resources, workforce development opportunities, and housing assistance -- many also received free clothing and food boxes.
To all who have served, your spirit of service is alive and continues to light the torch of freedom. May God bless each of you and may God Bless the United States of America.
Unfortunately, Veterans are often targeted by scammers. Here are some tips from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office to help you and your loved ones avoid these scams.
- Never make a payment upfront for an investment or business without doing research
- Never give out personal identifying information during unsolicited calls
- Never send cash, wire money, pay in gift card or use other untraceable methods of payment unless you are familiar with the charitable organization
