PLEASE JOIN US TO LEARN ABOUT AN IMPORTANT COMPENSATION OPPORTUNITY FOR SURVIVORS OF INVOLUNTARY STERILIZATIONS IN CA WOMEN'S PRISONS
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 9TH - 12-1 PM
REGISTER NOW FOR THIS IMPORTANT MEETING
Do you work with clients/people who may have been under the custody of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation? Is it possible they were victims of forced or involuntary sterilizations? If so, they may be eligible for victim compensation.
In July 2021, Governor Newsom signed off on a state budget which included a $7.5 million allocation for reparations/compensation to survivors of involuntary sterilizations in California women’s state prisons after 1979. A coalition of community groups including Back to Basics-LA, California Coalition for Women Prisoners, Belly of the Beast film team, CA Latinas for Reproductive Justice, and Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund worked for four years to win this reparations program after over 144 sterilizations in the women's prisons were exposed by a state audit in 2014.
The program is a crucial opportunity for women, trans and GNC people who were forcibly sterilized while incarcerated to get monetary compensation for the terrible harm that was done to them. The Compensation Program will be administered by the California Victims’ Compensation Board (VCB). It is up to community groups, health care agencies and educational institutions that support this vulnerable population of people to ensure they are informed about this compensation program!
Please attend this informational meeting to learn more about the program and how you can help outreach with this information. The meeting will cover:
- Basics about the compensation program
- Application for compensation
- Outreach strategies
- Other possible programs such as trauma-based support groups, surveys of community members, and advocacy regarding reproductive injustice.

DENVER, CO / WASHINGTON DC -- The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) released its 2020 "Remember My Name" today, marking the 27th addition to the collection. The poster's release coincides with Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) in October. This year's image was designed by NCADV and can be downloaded from the NCADV website.
The 2020 Remember My Name includes the names, ages, and states of 226 victims killed by domestic violence abusers last year as well as an additional 36 victims from previous years. “For NCADV, along with the families and loved ones of those represented on this poster, this is more than a poster. This is a tribute and call to action. A tribute to those we have lost to domestic violence and a call to action by those families, friends, communities and others impacted by these losses. As always, we are overwhelmed by the number of victims and ask you to respond to this crisis, on behalf of those lost and impacted by this public health crisis." says Ruth M. Glenn, NCADV's President/CEO.
NCADV, in conjunction with Ms. Magazine, started the Remember My Name project in 1994 to create a national registry of names to increase public awareness of domestic violence deaths. Since then, NCADV has continued to collect information on incidents of women and others who have been killed by an intimate partner and produces an image in memoriam each year for Domestic Violence Awareness Month listing the names of those submitted. NCADV is creating as complete a registry as possible of women, children and men who have lost their lives due to domestic violence.
Domestic violence is prevalent in every community and affects all people regardless of age, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality. In the United States, an average of 20 people are physically abused by intimate partners every minute, which equates to more than 10 million abuse victims each year.

JADV has collected over 12,000 gifts for these families in need, and your support is very important to us!
One in four women and one in nine men experience severe intimate partner physical violence. This equates to more than 10 million women and men per year (according to the National Coalition of Domestic Violence). During the COVID-19 pandemic domestic violence statistics are surging, and your donations are greatly needed.
The JADV Toy and Gift Drive coordinates with 211 and shelters in the South and Central Los Angeles area, including Project Peacemakers and other shelters in need. Unwrapped toys and gifts are distributed to survivors of domestic violence for their children ages newborn to 19 years old. We also collect gifts for the Moms.
