The LACBA-Counsel for Justice Domestic Violence Legal Services Project (DVP) is hosting a free MCLE webinar by the Family Violence Appellate Project.
Laying Your Record & Assessing Post-Hearing Options in DV Family Law Cases
Getting the findings and record you need to give your client the options of post-trial motions, writs or appeals is an ongoing challenge and yet especially critical when serving domestic violence survivors. This training will discuss current law and strategies for determining what you need in your record and possible ways to get it. We will look at areas in family law where factual findings, legal conclusions or orders with specific content are required. We will discuss post-hearing options depending on whether you get a sufficient record and considerations for deciding next steps.
October 18, 2021, 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.

Justice is truth. Justice is accountability. Justice is prevention.
"They did not hear me. They did not work with me, for me, or trust me. I took many protective actions for my children. No one asked me about them. I was a good teen mother who had her parents' support yet I was stereotyped as being a bad mother."
- Selena Hernandez
Futures Without Violence, Ujima: National Center on Violence Against Women in the Black Community, Women Transforming Families, and Latinos United for Peace and Equity would like to invite you to attend this first of its kind 3-part series called The Accountability Dialogues.
The Accountability Dialogues is amplifying the voices and circumstances of survivors from communities of color who experienced domestic violence and have been revictimized by the child welfare system. In sharing their truth and expertise, survivors will then co-create innovative recommendations with policymakers to transform the child welfare system.
This 3-part series will advance justice for survivors and take place over the following dates and times:
-
October 21st, 1 - 2:30pm ET — Justice is Truth: Truth-telling by survivors of domestic violence
-
October 27th, 2 - 3:30pm ET — Justice is Accountability: Policymakers exchange ideas for bold change based on survivors' stories.
-
November 1st, 1 - 3pm ET — Justice is Prevention: Policymakers and survivors co-design innovative policy to address harm done to families and transform the system.
Our objectives are to:
-
Re-invent the process for developing policy and give a platform to survivors of domestic violence to share their experiences and define challenges within child welfare that lead to negative outcomes for children and families of color.
-
Engage policymakers in listening to reflections by survivors, to recognize the harm done by institutions, and the policy changes necessary to mitigate these practices.
-
Create an opportunity for survivors and policy makers to co-design policy change and implementation.
-
Review, analyze and critique practices that feed child and adult survivors into the child welfare system that demean and re-victimize survivors of color, and propose alternative responses.
-
Amplify the conversations nationally, give notice to policymakers, and provide survivors with the tools to replicate the process for co-design.
Please head to this webpage to register and learn more about The Accountability Dialogues and our vision for justice http://go.futureswithoutviolence.org/e/858853/view-justiceis-/kftt2/169972067?h=0v7AlED4nLt7ylJ4F8NhCbweXfDLXfn_90KUehKGgNE
We sincerely hope to see you there and look forward to learning and unlearning in our process of system co-creation.
In solidarity, Change Makers, Survivors, Good Trouble Makers, Advocates, Policymakers, Artists, and Allies.
