A recent change in California law allows prosecutors to reopen closed cases and ask a court to resentence an individual who no longer poses a danger to the community. This new legal authority gives prosecutors the ability to recall a sentence in the interest of justice.
Under District Attorney George Gascón, the office has undertaken a massive effort to review and evaluate criminal cases for possible resentencing. As many as 20,000 cases from Los Angeles County may be eligible for resentencing under the law.
If you have questions about the law, what types of cases are being considered, how the process works and how those affected are being notified, visit: http://da.lacounty.gov/resentencing.

LADA staffers volunteered at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank last month, assembling 8,100 meals, and donated more than $7,500, which will pay for about 30,000 meals for children and seniors in need. The effort was part of the annual Food From the Bar campaign led by the Los Angeles legal community to benefit the food bank.
Child Abduction Unit Reunites Father, Daughter
LEFT: Senior Investigators Claudia Rodriguera and Vince Albo look on as Herb Legall III reunites with his daughter. RIGHT: Legall hugs his daughter.
Clutching a fuzzy stuffed bunny, the 5-year-old girl peered at her father whom she had not seen since she was 2. His worries that she wouldn't remember him quickly vanished.
“I love you, daddy,” she said before rushing into his arms.
“I broke out in tears,” Herb Legall III said, recounting the April 29 reunion. “It was an awesome moment, and one I had been waiting for, for years.”
The successful reunion was the result of the hard work of the office’s Child Abduction Unit. Senior Investigator Jennifer Martin led the case. Sgt. Andy Le and Senior Investigator Claudia Rodriguera, who comprise the unit with Martin were at the recovery, along with Senior Investigators Steve Lasiter, Bob Anderson, Vince Albo and Lou Santaella.
