FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STARTING TOMORROW, LACoFD CO-HOSTS COVID-19 SAFETY STAND DOWN FOR FIRST RESPONDERS

Los Angeles, CA – In recent weeks, the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD), along with our fire service peers across Southern California, has seen a steady rise in COVID-19 infection rates among first responders.

To further emphasize and bring awareness to the severe risks and impacts that COVID-19 presents to first responders, their families, and our communities, the Los Angeles Area Fire Chiefs Association (LAAFCA), comprised and led by 30 local fire chiefs, is presenting a regional Safety Stand Down this week for all firefighters to participate.

This COVID-19 Safety Stand Down will NOT impact emergency service delivery.  LACoFD members will participate beginning tomorrow through Friday, July 24, 2020.  As part of the Safety Stand Down, we will re-emphasize social distancing, the necessity to wear facial coverings, and the vital importance of the proper use of personal protective equipment.

“Working with LAAFCA, it is our sincere hope that we can collectively flatten the curve amongst first responders.  It is critical that we act now, so we may continue to seamlessly serve our communities during this time of need,” said Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby.

As of Monday, July 20, 2020, a total of 138 LACoFD members have tested positive for COVID-19; 114 of those members have returned to work while 24 others are COVID-19 positive and recovering at home.  An additional 36 LACoFD members are awaiting test results.

For further questions regarding the COVID-19 Safety Stand Down, please contact Fire Captain Ron Haralson, Public Information Office, at (213) 200-2477.
