City Manager's Message
Dear Jurupa Valley Insider,
It’s been a busy month, and I’d like to share some key updates and exciting initiatives for February.
Addressing Power Outages We understand the challenges the recent power outages have posed for many of our residents. The City Council and I are actively working with Southern California Edison to reduce the duration of planned outages and minimize disruptions. In early January, Mayor Berkson and Mayor Pro Tem Chris Barajas traveled to Sacramento to meet with legislators and other agencies, including Edison, to advocate for Jurupa Valley. We are also planning a community meeting soon to hear your feedback and concerns. Your safety and well-being are our top priority.
Stay Prepared During Outages We encourage everyone to stay prepared by visiting Southern California Edison’s website for updates on Public Safety Power Shutoffs: SCE Outage Center webpage. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and X for the latest information.
Economic Development – Community Meeting & Survey This month, we’re hosting a community meeting to discuss our Economic Development Strategy. We want to hear your ideas on how we can grow and improve Jurupa Valley.
We also invite you to complete our Economic Development Survey to share your thoughts on the City’s future.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to enhance our community. Enjoy this month’s issue of the Jurupa Valley Insider!

Jurupa Valley's new Mayor Brian Berkson and Mayor Pro Tem Chris Barajas began 2025 by attending the California Contract Cities Association (CCCA) Annual Sacramento Legislative Tour (SLOT) from January 6-7. During the event, they met with state legislators to discuss key issues affecting the City.
Berkson and Barajas focused on a range of topics, including homelessness, retail theft, housing affordability, and local control over land use. Barajas also spoke at a press conference supporting Proposition 36, which addresses organized retail theft. The leaders also met with Attorney General Rob Bonta to discuss housing concerns.
The CCCA’s SLOT event provided a valuable platform for local officials to engage with state lawmakers and advocate for policies that address their communities’ needs.

What is a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS)?
When weather conditions create a high risk for a wildfire, Southern California Edison (SCE) may temporarily shut off power to your neighborhood to prevent the electric system from becoming the source of ignition. These outages are called Public Safety Power Shutoffs.
Facts:
- A PSPS is a measure of last resort to keep communities safe by temporarily shutting off power during dangerous weather conditions.
- SCE relies on a team of experts in grid operations, meteorology and fire sciences that monitors weather models for any changes or shifts in weather patterns.
- Shutoffs are based on actual conditions seen by live field observers, weather models, and by other considerations including real-time weather data and early fire detection technology.
Sign Up for Notifications
SCE intends to notify affected customers approximately 48 hours in advance of a potential PSPS event and will attempt to notify customers again approximately 24 hours before power is shut off. Additional notifications will be made throughout the outage, when power has been shut off and when it has been restored. Notifications may occur via a combination of a phone call, text, sce.com, email, and social media. Click here to sign up for SCE customer alerts!
