Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones names Dr. Paul Song as Department's
First Visiting Fellow
Visiting Fellows program to expose mid/upper-level professionals to insurance matters

SACRAMENTO - Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones announced today that he has named Dr. Paul Y. Song as the first Visiting Fellow at the California Department of Insurance (CDI).



"I am pleased to welcome Dr. Paul Song to our team as our first Visiting Fellow," said Commissioner Jones. "We are fortunate to have his expertise and the perspective he brings as a physician and healthcare leader. Both CDI and the consumers we protect stand to benefit tremendously from his extensive experience and knowledge regarding healthcare issues."



Dr. Song is a faculty member in the Samuel Oschin Cancer Center at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Biomedical Sciences in Los Angeles, Calif. He also serves as a senior adviser at Berg Pharma, a privately held biotech company. He graduated with honors from the University of Chicago and received his medical degree from George Washington University. Upon completion of his residency in radiation oncology at the University of Chicago, he served as Chief Resident and was honored as an ASTRO Research Fellow by the American Society for Radiation Oncology.



He has been a tireless advocate for increased access to healthcare for all, and was a frequent contributor to CNN, Larry King Live, and the Huffington Post during the healthcare reform debate. He also serves on the board of Physicians for a National Health Program (California chapter), The Courage Campaign, and People for the American Way.



As a Visiting Fellow with CDI, Dr. Song will work directly with the Commissioner and Executive Team. He will attend meetings and briefings with the Commissioner and other senior leaders of the Department during his six-month Fellowship. He will also complete a research project focusing on family physician shortage and recommendations to the Insurance Commissioner on how to address this pressing issue.
