Aid for Homeowners Recovering from Recent Disasters
Applications for the CalAssist Mortgage Fund are now open to California homeowners impacted by recent disasters.
The State of California’s new $105 million mortgage relief fund is administered by the California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA) and will provide three months of mortgage payments, up to $20,000, to eligible homeowners.
Low- to middle-income households may qualify if they are currently displaced from their home that was destroyed or left uninhabitable as the result of a qualified disaster that occurred between January 2023 and January 2025, such as the Eaton Fire, Palisades Fire, Park Fire and San Diego floods.
CalHFA Chief Deputy Director Rebecca Franklin said the mortgage relief payments are meant to serve as “a bridge to recovery” for communities that have endured disasters in recent years.
“Californians are resilient, resourceful and care deeply about our communities,” Franklin added. “The CalAssist Mortgage Fund provides near-term relief from mortgage payments for homeowners who are working to recover.”
The CalAssist Mortgage Fund was announced by state and county officials in Altadena, California, on June 5, 2025.
Interested homeowners can apply online at CalAssistMortgageFund.org. Once submitted, applications will be reviewed in the order received.
Key program eligibility criteria includes:
- Applicants’ primary residence was destroyed or is uninhabitable due to a qualified disaster from 01/01/2023 through 01/08/2025
- Applicant meets program income limits
- Applicant has a mortgage or reverse mortgage
- Applicant owns a single-family home, condo or permanently affixed manufactured home (may include up to 4 units).
Homeowner grants don’t have to be repaid and applying to the program is free. Grants will be sent directly to the eligible homeowner’s mortgage servicer.
The funds will be administered for as long as they are available.
“Homeowners that are juggling the challenges created by these devastating events, deserve this relief,” Franklin said. “Funds are limited, however, so Californians should apply now.”
Homeowners can call the CalAssist Mortgage Fund for in-depth, one-on-one assistance with preparing and completing their application. Call 800-501-0019 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Additionally, homeowners can also access free support and services from HUD-certified housing counseling agencies.
