Welcome to the Library Reading Corner for November 2024
A Note from City Librarian Elizabeth Saucedo:
Hello to our wonderful library patrons! As many of you know, there are some changes afoot among our beloved libraries, and what better time to check in with you than in our November newsletter.
A year ago, the City of Goleta received a $4.2 million Building Forward facility improvement grant from the California State Library to improve the safety and accessibility of Goleta Valley Library. Since then, the project team of City staff, architects, and engineers have been hard at work developing plans to bring the project to life, and this fall it was determined that the library must temporarily close to the public and to staff for 18-24 months while the work is completed, both to ensure our safety and to complete the project by the grant deadline of June 2027. However, because the library is a cornerstone of the Goleta community and welcomes an average of over 14,000 visitors each month, efforts have also been underway to identify a temporary offsite location where high-quality, vital library services can continue to be provided during the closure of the main branch when construction is expected to begin midyear. After an initial discussion at the October 1st City Council meeting, the project team is planning to present further research into options for offsite library locations at the November 19th Council meeting. Options include lease space, rooms at the Goleta Community Center, and modular portable classrooms.
Once a new site is authorized, more information will be available regarding how library services may be modified and what creative ways we’ll explore to continue to provide library service to our community, both locally and as a member of the Black Gold Cooperative Library System.
Be sure to check our website for the latest details and information for your local branch, including the ongoing Buellton Library move to its new location at 202 Dairyland Road. During these times of change, we are especially grateful to our community for their exceptional support of their libraries, and we look forward to continuing to bring you resources, information, entertainment, and enrichment every step of the way.
-Elizabeth Saucedo, City Librarian

The Goleta Valley Library, located at 500 N. Fairview Avenue in Goleta, is scheduled to temporarily close in April 2025 to undergo much-needed infrastructure improvements to make the 53-year-old facility safer and more accessible. The $5.3M upgrades are funded by a $4.2 million dollar grant from the California State Library, a generous donation of $250,000 from the Friends of the Goleta Valley Library, and City matching funds. The project must be completed by June 2027, per grant requirements. The anticipated two-year closure is needed to accommodate construction activities and to relocate collection materials and equipment pre- and post- construction.
