Join Us for the February 6 Goleta City Council Meeting
Topics Include: Black History Month, Creek & Watershed Management Plan, and Goleta Valley Library Book Van
We hope you will join us for the Goleta City Council meeting this Tuesday, February 6, at 5:30 p.m. (closed session begins at 4:30 p.m.). We encourage you to join us in City Council Chambers, watch live, and/or participate via Zoom. Directions for how to do so can be found below. Items on the agenda include:
- The City Council will proclaim February 2024 as Black History Month. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. The 2024 Santa Barbara County theme is “Black History: More than a Month” and the national theme is “African Americans and the Arts.” Community organizations across Santa Barbara County will be offering events both in-person and virtually. For the full calendar of events, please visit: JuneteenthSB.org. View the proclamation here: http://tinyurl.com/yhhb8jmr.
- The Council will receive a presentation on the City’s Water Quality Program. As part of the Creek and Watershed Plan/Program, the City and community desire to protect Goleta’s creeks and water quality, identify activities or areas of the City where further focus is warranted, and work to improve the health of our watersheds now and far into the future. City staff, along with Geosyntec Consultants and Dudek, conducted a robust review and data analysis of the historical creek monitoring data and trash program data to characterize creek water quality and trash pollution reduction measures, and develop future action. - The City Council will receive an update on the Creek and Watershed Management Program, and consider dissolving the Solid Waste Standing Committee, and making appointments to the Watersheds and Waste Reduction Standing Committee. Staff will provide 2023 Creek and Watershed Management Plan (CWMP) accomplishments and updates as well as discuss priorities and projects for FY 24/25. Staff also recommend that, if willing, the existing members of the Solid Waste Standing Committee are appointed to the new and more relevant Watersheds and Waste Reduction Standing Committee. The staff report is available here: http://tinyurl.com/333efr7a.
- The Council will receive an update on the Goleta Valley Library Book Van. The book van began offering services to the Isla Vista community in October 2021. It currently serves ten sites on a rotating basis over a two-week period in Isla Vista. Council directed staff to look into increasing the number of book van site visits. After doing so, staff is recommending to keep the status quo, particularly in light of the potential for a future change in per capita funding currently coming to City of Goleta that could be redirected to Isla Vista.
