Santa Barbara County Reports Additional COVID-19 Related Deaths
74 New Cases Reported for Today, July 31
Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (PHD) reports 74 new cases for today, July 31. The total confirmed case count is 6167, and the number of active cases is 249. PHD is also reporting 28 additional deaths of individuals who tested positive for COVID-19. Most of these deaths occurred between June 22 and July 31. Of the 28 deaths, we are reporting today, 75% are over 70 years of age and had underlying conditions. Twenty-two percent were Caucasian and 78% were Hispanic. Ten were agricultural workers. The age and region data is listed below. A data reporting error that transpired during the changeover in reporting systems, which occurred in June, has been corrected.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to every person across our communities who are mourning a loved one lost," said Dr. Henning Ansorg, Santa Barbara County Health Officer. “Please continue to wear face coverings, maintain physical distancing, and avoid gathering with people you don’t live with. Gatherings provide a significant opportunity for this virus to spread into our community increasing hospitalizations and prolonging closures.”
Although most cases of COVID-19 exhibit mild or moderate symptoms, PHD recommends additional measures to prevent exposure among vulnerable people, including the elderly and those with underlying health conditions (such as diabetes, cancer, immunodeficiency, asthma, COPD and others). PHD recommends that residents:
- Stay home when possible.
- Remain six feet away from others and wear a facial covering when engaging in tasks away from home.
- Wash your hands with soap and water regularly.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
- Stay home when you are sick. Do not go to work or other places.
All local employers and business owners are urged to adhere closely to sector health and safety guidelines. Ensuring a safe environment for both employees and customers is critical to slowing the spread of COVID-19 and assuring that businesses remain safely open during this time.
