Thomas Fire - December 13, 12:00 p.m.

City News

Fire Update - 12/13/17, 12:00 p.m.

The Thomas Fire has burned 237,500 acres and is at 25% containment with 7,956 fire personnel working to put out the fire. Gusty Santa Ana winds will continue to battle with terrain driven winds. Most significant fire growth will occur to the west. Very high fuel loading, critically low fuel moistures, above average temperatures and single-digit relative humidity will continue to support fire growth on the west, east and north sides of the Thomas Incident. Firefighters will remain engaged in structure defense operations and scout for opportunities to establish direct perimeter control. Fire will continue to threaten the communities of Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Summerland, Montecito and surrounding areas. Fire line construction to the north of these communities will continue. Winds are expected to be similar to yesterday.

The air quality today in Goleta is slightly better than yesterday. Air quality information and a smoke forecast can be found on APCD’s website here.

Free masks will continue to be distributed today.  Goleta locations include the Goleta Valley Community Center, Goleta City Hall and Costco in Camino Real.  Read the full list with times here.

In coordination with local partners at the Emergency Operations Center, street sweeping in Goleta will resume today. This is part of an effort to minimize the impact of ash produced by the Thomas Fire and prevent pollution and debris from flowing to the watersheds. However, individuals are discouraged from beginning clean up until the air quality improves.  Read more here

Marborg will resume trash, recycling and green waste pick up tomorrow, Thursday, December 14.

A community meeting will be held at 4 p.m. at San Marcos High School, 4750 Hollister Avenue.  Interpretation in Spanish and American Sign Language will be available.  The County of Santa Barbara will provide live streaming on their Facebook page here.

Current incident information can be found here in English and Spanish.  Information is available 24/7 in multiple languages at 2-1-1 or 800-400-1573 (for those calling from out of town).
