At a special meeting on Friday, November 13, the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway & Transportation District (District) Board of Directors voted to lay off some staff in order to reduce costs and address the budget shortfall under the COVID-19 pandemic. The District is facing unprecedented financial challenges because of the pandemic, and the federal funds received to support transit operations were exhausted at the end of November. Even after implementing significant cost-saving measures, the District still faces a $48 million budget deficit (expenses exceeding revenues) for the current fiscal year. Construction on the Corte Madera Marsh Restoration began on Monday, October 26, and will continue through January 31, 2021. The project will restore four acres out of a 72-acre District-owned parcel to tidal marsh, bolstering the habitat for endangered species and adding amenities along a reconfigured recreational path.
