Glendale Acquires Land for First New Park in 25 Years
We’re excited to announce that the City of Glendale has officially purchased a 2.3-acre site at 1000 S. Central Ave.—formerly the JOANN Fabric and Crafts Store—to be transformed into a much-needed public park in South Glendale.
Approved by the Glendale City Council on June 24, the $24.7 million purchase marks the first major parkland acquisition in over 25 years. South Glendale has long been identified as one of the city’s most underserved areas in terms of access to green space, and this future park will help close that gap.
What’s Next?
Over the coming months, the Community Services & Parks Department will begin planning for this exciting project. A community-driven design process will shape what amenities are included, such as children’s play areas, a water play feature, restrooms, picnic areas, fitness equipment, walking paths, murals and living green walls, turf and native grasses, native/drought-tolerant planting areas, and/or a demonstration garden.
This park is expected to become the fifth largest park in South Glendale, offering vital recreation and gathering space for residents of all ages.
Stay Informed & Get Involved! Want to receive updates and learn about future community meetings? Visit GlendaleCA.gov/NewPark to learn more and be added to the project update list.

Art Exhibit by Yeu Q. Nguyen:
Of Waves and Stones
Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station 1020 E. Palmer Ave., Glendale, CA 91205 through September 19, 2025
Of Wave and Stones by Yeu Q. Nguyen is on display at the Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station from Monday, July 28 - Friday, September 19, 2025. Using water as a symbol for the quiet determination that allows us to inevitably triumph over obstacles, Of Wave and Stones pays homage to the ancient Asian wisdom on the power of resilience and the courageous immigrants and refugees who made their new lives in America. Its structural design, inspired by the construction of a bridal veil, and the use of delicate tulle debunks the myth of feminine fragility and celebrates power as a balance embodying both strength and softness.
This temporary art installation is sponsored by the Glendale Arts and Culture Commission with funding from the Urban Art Program, and support from Glendale Library, Arts & Culture, Glendale Community Services & Parks, and the Adams Hill Neighborhood Association.
