Summer is around the corner, Glendale! As we embrace the warmth of this new season, I’m excited to share all of our upcoming events and resources with you, such as insightful webinars, a save the date for our famous Cruise Night, and so much more! Inside this edition of the City Connection newsletter, you'll find essential summer tips to help you make the most of the season in our wonderful Jewel City.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Summer Day Camp registration is still open for two of our locations, with limited availability, be sure to enroll soon! These camps are packed with fun and educational activities to keep our youth engaged and active all summer long!
- Our Sustainability team, along with the Community Services and Parks team, is actively recruiting student commissioners, which is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in local government, along with helping shape the future of our city!
- City offices will be closed on June 19, in observance of Juneteenth, a historic day marking the end of slavery in the United States.

Limited Spots Available in Summer Day Camps ☀️
Summer Day Camps registration is still open! Though most of our camps are sold out, there are still some spaces available in Sparr-Tacular Half-Day Camp (Ages 6-12) at Sparr Heights Community Center and Travelin’ Teens Camp (Ages 12-14) at Pacific Community Center.
To receive reduced Glendale Resident rates, you must provide proof of residency for 2024 in the form of a utility bill showing at least 2 months history, or a deed/rental agreement, and you must receive confirmation of residency prior to registering as a resident. Please email your proof of residency to CSPCustomerService@GlendaleCA.gov, bring it to any community center, or the Customer Service Office.

Glendale Clothing Swap & Repair Café!
The Glendale Clothing Swap and Repair Café are back at Pacific Park's Library! We're partnering with Suay LA to offer extra services to Glendale residents, such as teaching attendees simple repairs, and Community Dye Bath to upcycle clothes and textiles with new colors. The first 50 Glendale residents on each day can get a discounted Community Dye Bath service.

Cars for Cops & Kids Car Show!
Join us at Verdugo Park for the Cars for Cops & Kids Car Show hosted by the Rotary Club of Glendale. The event will feature hundreds of cars, fresh grilled gourmet burgers, ice-cold craft beer, and fine wine tasting.
If you have a car that you would like to show, registration is only $30 and includes a variety of perks, including an event t-shirt, your choice of lunch from one of the event vendors, and more! Same day registration is $35.
All proceeds benefit at-risk youth programs through the Glendale Police Foundation and local youth programs through the Rotary Club of Glendale Foundation.

Glendale Outdoors!
Spend quality family time enjoying the great outdoors once a month with our naturalists! We invite you to join us in exploring the Stone Barn Nature Center, go on an interpretive hike, and create a nature-themed craft.
A FREE bus leaves from Pacific Community Center, 501 S. Pacific Ave. at 8:30 AM and returns at 12:30 PM. Everyone is encouraged to ride the bus, but you may choose to meet us at Deukmejian park.

City Offices Closed for Juneteenth
All Glendale City offices will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, in observance of Juneteenth. This is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Join us in celebrating this important holiday by honoring freedom, resilience, and the fight for equality.
Campfire Program 🏕️

Summer Reading is Back!
Join Glendale Library, Arts & Culture’s 77th Annual Summer Reading Challenge June 1st through August 10th, with the theme “Read, Renew, Repeat.” All ages can register in person at any of GLAC’s eight branch libraries, or online through the Glendale Beanstack Website.
Children, Teens, and Adults receive prizes for signing up for the challenge, meeting reading goals, and completing fun activities.
Last year, our community read over 400,000 minutes together through the Summer Reading Challenge! Let’s see if Glendale can surpass that this summer!

Enjoy Deukmejian Wilderness Park without worrying about how to get there! Wander the Wilderness Bus is a FREE shuttle operating every weekend to help you and your family get to the park, and explore the wilderness!
Funding for the bus is provided by Metro, a partner in our community.

The 29th Annual Cruise Night Event will be held in the heart of Glendale on Brand Blvd. Join us to witness hundreds of classic and import/modified cars, while listening to the live performances on the main stage.
The evening includes city & vendor booths, giveaways, activities for kids, and FUN! Restaurants in the area will all be open to satisfy your hunger during the event. Stick around to the end for a Fireworks Spectacular Show at the main stage. This event is FREE!

Application for Trail Safety Patrol Now Open! 🚲
As a Trail Safety Patrol (TSP) volunteer, you have a unique opportunity to assist the City of Glendale by providing public assistance and resource protection. Your influence on park visitors will enhance their experience and safety while in our parks!
Qualifications:
- Must be 18 Years of Age
- Undergo a Background Check and City-mandated Trail Safety Training
- Be in Good Health
- Devote a Minimum of Two Hours per Month

2024 Fire Service Day Was A Success! 🚒
On Saturday, May 11th, the Glendale Fire Department opened its doors to the community for its annual Fire Service Day. More than 5,000 people explored Fire Station 21 to interact with their first responders.
Some highlights included seeing Fire Chief Fish and the Command Staff cook and serve free pancakes, live demonstrations such as vehicle extrications, and a visit from Mickey and Minnie Mouse! Events like these are essential for improving community safety awareness and for building the mutual trust and cooperation needed to effectively manage emergencies. We can't wait for next year!

Glendale Water & Power (GWP) is proud to announce the launch of SmartVX, an innovative personalized video solution provided by Harris Computers to enhance their customer engagement experience.
This initiative is set to improve the way GWP communicates with their customers, offering tailored video content directly linked to their specific needs and interactions with municipal services such as bills, programs, news announcements, and outage management information.

Compost Program Partnership!
The City of Glendale's Integrated Waste Management team has concluded an enriching 10-week partnership with Glendale Community College's Team Internships class. Together, they collaborated on developing an innovative, community-centered compost program poised to enhance our city!
Park Playground Survey Now Available!
We'll be replacing the playgrounds at Adams Square Mini Park and Mayors Bicentennial Park in Fall 2024, and need your input!

Wading Pools 🌊
Wading pools are small 1-2 ft. deep pools designed for children 8 years and under. There are 4 wading pools throughout the city that will open for drop-by use beginning June 10 on a rotating basis. You can reserve a wading pool for your private party, too! We are now taking reservations for wading pool rentals from June through September.
Free Shade Trees! 🌳
The Tree Power Program helps eligible residential customers save energy by offering up to three free shade trees to plant on their property. Properly planted shade trees can help residents save 10%-50% in air conditioning costs.
Glendale residential customers can choose up to three free shade trees from a list of 30 different varieties. Submit your request below:

Want to Make a Difference in our Community?
Volunteering for a Board or Commission is one of the best ways to give back to your community! If you have an eye for design plans, or know the in's and out's of building safety codes, apply to join either of the following Boards and help shape the future of our community!
Summary of each Commission's purview:
Arts & Culture Commission - facilitate interaction among artists, promote art activities and education and recognize achievement in the arts.
Audit Committee - review financial information and internal controls. Provide recommendation to the City Council regarding the scope, areas of audit and priority.
Building & Fire Board of Appeals - consider appeals of orders, decisions or determinations made by the Building Official and/or the Fire Marshal relative to the Glendale Building & Safety Code.
Civil Service Commission - establishes the rules and policies under which Glendale's merit system operates, ensuring continuation of Glendale's reputation as a city whose employees attain and keep their positions on the basis of ability, training and experience, rather than political patronage.
Commission on the Status of Women - assess and evaluate the needs and issues of women in the City and to advise the City Council, City departments and other community agencies and organizations of those needs and issues. Recommend programs or legislation to the City Council.
Community Development Block Grant Advisory Committee - The duties of the Committee are to oversee an annual community needs assessment and determine funding priorities; evaluate funding proposals and make funding recommendations to City Council; and review performance and program revisions by funded agencies.
Design Review Board – review and approve design plans and applications in accordance with the Glendale Zoning Code, with a focus on appearance, site planning, design, and general layout.
Glendale Water and Power Commission - Acting in an advisory manner, the GWP Commission is charged with the responsibility of recommending to the City Council changes or improvements in the City's water and electric system, together with recommendation as to means of financing such improvements. The Commission also recommends any changes in operational policies which deems advisable and hears water conservation appeals.
Historic Preservation Commission - advise the City Council on historic preservation issues, including the designation of properties to the Glendale Historic Property Register, and assist in building community support for preservation issues.
Parks, Recreation & Community Services Commission - advise the City Council on programming of parks, playgrounds and recreational activities.
Planning Commission - review and make recommendations to City Council on general and master plans and approval of major land subdivision plans. They also consider and determine issues of condominium approvals, minor land divisions, and approvals for Special Recreation Zone issues.
