Memorial Plaque on a Bench or Picnic Table Set in a Glendale Park
We are offering an opportunity to honor someone who has passed and who is recognized for a notable contribution to the Glendale community with a memorial plaque. According to City policy, “memorial plaque” refers to a metal plate made of bronze which is attached to a concrete bench or picnic table set in a Glendale park. This policy does not apply to plaques which may be used as a form of recognition for building dedications, official historical designation, donors, or sponsors. Additional information is available on the CSP website: https://www.glendaleca.gov/government/departments/community-services-parks/csp-policies-procedures. For any questions regarding the memorial plaques, please call (818) 548-2000 or email csp@glendaleca.gov.
Planting of New "Oak of Peace" Tree at Catalina Verdugo Adobe
March 31, 2023 marked a commemorative day at the Catalina Verdugo Adobe with the planting of a new “Oak of Peace” tree. Ann Denis, lead docent of the historic home, was joined by the members of the Don José Verdugo Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) – Amy Toczek, Caroline Craven, and Becky Gelhaar, for the groundbreaking event.
The NSDAR group helped fund the purchase of the new oak tree, and it is because of this local chapter that the Catalina Verdugo Adobe was registered as California State Historical Landmark No. 637. There is also a memorial plaque attached to the outer front wall (southeast corner) of the adobe placed by the group in 1958 to celebrate the landmark status. The creation and placement of a wayfinding sign for the new “Oak of Peace” is led by the members of the group to further contribute to the stewardship of the adobe. The NSDAR group sends their immense gratitude to the Urban Forestry section of the Public Works department to coordinate the purchase and delivery of the tree with West Coast Arborists, Inc. (WCA) and to the Parks team of the Community Services & Parks department for preparing the area to plant the tree and its future maintenance.
The new “Oak of Peace” stands tall next to the original Oak of Peace sign which reads, “USA-MEXICO PEACE TREATY 1847. HERE GENERAL A. PICO MET ENVOYS OF GENERAL J. C. FREMONT TO PLANT TREATY OF CAHUENGA ENDING WAR”. The original tree yielded to natural death in 1987, but the legacy of the “Oak of Peace” will continue on as part of Glendale’s history.
