A Message from the City Manager, Roubik Golanian
Change is in the air! The weather is getting slightly cooler; the leaves are browning, falling, and covering Glendale sidewalks and backyards. We also have some exciting changes at City Hall as we have three new executives joining our team.
If you haven’t heard yet, the City of Glendale and the Glendale Fire Department have a new Fire Chief. Timothy Ernst was appointed as Fire Chief on September 13, 2022. Chief Ernst joins us from the Los Angeles Fire Department, where he served as Assistant Chief and is a veteran of over 35 years at the California fire service.
On September 20, 2022, Bradley Calvert was appointed Director of the Community Development Department! Bradley has been with the City of Glendale for over four years, previously serving as the Assistant Director of Community Development – Planning and Economic Development.
Paula Adams is Glendale’s new Chief Human Resources Officer. Paula joined us from the Los Angeles World Airports, where she served as a Human Resources Director, a Labor Relations Manager, and the Airports Administration Director for 31 years with the City of Los Angeles.
I’m excited to welcome Chief Ernst, Bradley and Paula to our team! I am confident in their decades of experience, extensive knowledge, and passion for civil service will enhance our community.
We’re also pleased to announce the launch of our new online series, #MyGlendale Employee Highlights! Paula’s story is the first in our series, which gives you, the Glendale community, a chance to learn more about the people who serve you! Stay tuned on our social media accounts for new highlights.
I’d like to wish you all a safe and spooky Halloween! Did you know, Glendale was rated one of the safest cities for trick-or-treating? Check out our tips to help keep you and your family safe this Halloween season!

Watering Trees is Allowed and Easy
Did you know, GWP's Water Conservation rules do not restrict tree watering? Tree watering is allowed during outdoor watering dates, but there is no time limit, provided you use a hose with a shutoff, or with a bucket.
Water slowly so moisture soaks into the ground. For large trees, water monthly. Use a hose on a trickle, drip irrigation, or a soaker hose spread in a large spiral shape, around the canopy, but a few feet from the trunk. For younger trees, give 5-10 gallons weekly. Build a soil berm to contain water and allow it to soak in. A 3" layer of mulch helps retain moisture - but keep it 3” away from the trunk.
See GWP's Investments in Clean Energy on the 2021 Power Content Label!
GWP is well on track to meet its clean energy goal compared to our neighboring cities! Under the CEC’s Power Source Disclosure Program, GWP must disclose to its retail consumers the energy resources used to provide electricity service and the greenhouse gas emissions intensity associated with its retail electricity portfolio through an annual Power Content Label.
For comparison, the label includes a summary of California’s overall power mix during the same period. The resources mix is shown as a percentage of actual Retail Sales. Click here to view the 2021 Power Content Label.
Compost at Home for a Beautiful Spring Garden!
Fall is the perfect time to begin composting at home and create a valuable soil amendment. Composting is a simple process that occurs naturally when equal amounts of green and brown materials (branches, leftover food, dried leaves, grass, and yard trimmings) are combined. Residents can request a Redmon 65 Gallon Home Compost Bin by sending an email to recycle@glendaleca.gov. More info here.
Organics Recycling: Are you an Expert?
How do you separate food scraps and food-soiled paper?
Food scraps and food-soiled paper must be secured in a clear plastic bag and then placed in your organics cart along with loose yard trimmings. To make the separation of food scraps easier, an organics recycling pail can be picked up from Public Works Integrated Waste.
What materials belong in your green organics recycling container?
Bagged food scraps, food-soiled paper (coffee filters, napkins, etc.), loose grass, and yard trimmings can be recycled in your green organics cart/bin. More information here.
|
Why is organics recycling required?
Organics recycling is a California State law, Senate Bill 1383, a statewide effort to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants.
Email recycle@glendaleca.gov for more information.

Thank you for your water conservation efforts! 🤝
Glendale Water & Power wants to take this opportunity to thank all of its customers who met the urgent request to avoid watering landscapes during Metropolitan Water District's (MWD) emergency pipeline repairs.
