Stone Barn Nature Center Grand Opening

Please join us on Saturday, March 19th at 11:00 a.m. for the grand opening of the Stone Barn Nature Center. Guests will enjoy outdoor activities, snacks, and an opportunity to take a self-led tour of the new nature center.

20th Annual Cesar Chavez Commemorative Event

The City of Glendale invites you to celebrate the life and work of farm worker, civil rights activist, and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, Cesar Chavez. The 20th annual event brings the Glendale community together to celebrate Chavez’s fight against injustice through his tireless leadership and nonviolent tactics.
The fun filled celebration will feature live performances, guest speakers, Glendale ROCKS! Climbing Wall, crafts for children, opportunity drawings, and free tacos while supplies last.

Expungement Clinic

On Saturday, March 12, 2022, the Armenian Bar Association, in collaboration with the City of Glendale Community Services & Parks Department, is holding an expungement clinic at Maple Park Community Center.
This FREE clinic can assist you with cleaning up your criminal record in the following areas: expungements, terminating probation per AB 1950, Prop 47 (felony reductions), juvenile record sealing.
The expungement clinic is by appointment only. Please email ArmenianClinic@gmail.com to make an appointment. You must have a copy of your court docket from a courthouse in the County you were convicted.

Cherry Blossom Festival

Sunday, March 20, will mark the return of the Cherry Blossom Celebration at the Shoseian Tea House in Glendale. It will be another great day in the Friendship Garden!
We had such a great response to last month's "Old School" Martial Arts demonstration that we are pleased to feature more aspects of the Kataori Shinto Ryu.
Please see the flyer below for the specific schedule from 9:30 AM - 2 PM, including three tea ceremonies, a great music & dance performance, Koto performance, and Japanese music.
Advanced reservation required for each tea ceremony. RSVP to glendaleteahouse.org ASAP, as the available seats fill up rapidly for the three Tea Ceremonies. Suggested donation per tea ceremony is $20 per person. These funds are earmarked by the Friends of Shoseian for necessary maintenance to the Tea House, a historic gem in Glendale.
Click on "Events" tab at top right of the website. Then select "2022 Events," and click on the "Tea Tickets" link just above the photo. Be sure to select, in the dropdown box, which time you would like to attend, and select how many seats you would like to reserve.
In addition to the Tea Ceremonies, you are welcome to attend all of the events planned for the Friendship Garden without reservations. Admission to the Garden is free.
Friends of Shoseian is a non-profit IRC Section 501 (c)(3) organization. Contributions can be tax deductible under IRC Section 170.

Senior Mixer
Pacific Community Center 501 S. Pacific Ave., Glendale, CA 91204 March 4 and 18, April 1, 15, and 29, 2022 2:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The senior mixer is a great opportunity to socialize with fellow seniors in the greater Glendale community, make new acquaintances, and have a good time.
If you like to salsa, cha-cha, rumba, waltz or boogie, this is the place to be. This activity takes place every other Friday. A suggested donation of $2.00 is collected at the entrance to the mixer. This is a gratuity that is given to the DJ at the end of each event.

Spring Break Camps 2022
We offer Spring Break Camps at Pacific Community Center and Sparr Heights Community Center. Although our camps at Pacific Community Center are FULL, we still have room at Sparr Heights Community Center. The camps will provide a safe place and an opportunity for campers to play, discover, learn, and interact, all while abiding by L.A. County guidelines. Deadline for Discount/Scholarship Application for Summer Day Camps 2022
For the past several years, we have had the privilege of presenting a number of scholarships and discounts to eligible Glendale residents for seasonal day camps. Our goal is to help make childcare affordable to residents facing financial burdens.
Eligible recipients are Glendale resident who qualify based on household income levels. Recipients can either qualify for a Full Scholarship or 10% discount.

Parent's Night Out
If you’re a parent looking for a night out in the city, we have you covered. Register and drop off the kiddos for a night of fun activities, sports, friends, food and a movie! Participants are encouraged to bring pajamas, a blanket and a pillow. Space is limited!

Teen Night Out
Every Friday at Alternating Locations 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Teen Night Out (TNO) occurs every Friday night from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., rotating between two locations, Pacific Community Center and Maple Park Community Center. Teen Night Out provides a safe place for teens to hang out and enjoy activities like video games, ping pong, use of a computer lab, and karaoke. On some dates, a workshop is conducted starting at 6:00 p.m. as part of Teen Night Out. Light refreshments will be served. Therapeutic Recreation Programming

Club Maple is a free program open to adults with intellectual disabilities which provides an opportunity for individuals to experience positive, healthy, recreational, cultural, educational, and social experiences. Get Fit In-person Every Monday 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Get Fit is a free program designed to improve the health status of adults with intellectual disabilities by focusing on nutrition, healthy meal planning, monthly weigh-ins and measurements, stretching and conditioning. Activities are age and skill appropriate. All participants are required to have a completed Release of Liability & Indemnity Agreement form on file.

Maple Inclusive Play Day Third Saturday of each month March 19 and April 16, 2022 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Maple Inclusive Play Day (MIP Day) creates an opportunity for families with children of all abilities to come to the park, network with each other and allow their children to socialize, all centered around the new Shane’s Inspiration all-inclusive playground.

Fitness Classes for Seniors: In-Person and Online
Exercise and fitness classes for seniors are now being offered in a hybrid format, online AND in-person. You are welcome to join us in either format. Classes include aerobics, slow stretch, line dancing, Zumba, and muscle toning.
If you wish to participate online via Zoom, please email cspcares@glendaleca.gov. We will send you a meeting invitation, meeting ID, and password.
Meeting ID and passwords to join the classes changed on January 1, 2022. Please be sure you reach out to us and ask for the new login information.
In-person classes must follow all LA County Health Department protocols, including the use of a face covering AT ALL TIMES while inside the community center, even during physical activity. In-person classes will be offered at Pacific Community Center on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. In-Person classes will be offered at Sparr Heights Community Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Pacific Community Pool is Open Year Round
Pacific Community Pool is open for lap and recreation swim as well as swim lessons, teams and private rentals. Plus, we are now offering adult aquacise classes! Visit www.glendaleaquatics.com for hours of operation, swim lesson times and general information. Lesson spaces fill up quickly, so be sure to register for the upcoming month of swim lessons, typically beginning on the third Tuesday of each month. We continue to offer the Glendale Gators, non-competitive swim team program. Group and private rentals are also available.

Tours of the Historic Doctors House Museum
The Glendale Historical Society will be providing guided tours of the Doctors House Museum every Sunday, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., beginning May 15, 2022. The suggested donation is $5.00. The Doctors House is located inside of Brand Park at 1601 W. Mountain St., Glendale, CA 91201.

When Should I Request Outreach for Homeless Services?
Did you see someone experiencing homelessness who needs help? Notice a homeless neighbor who seems to be struggling with their physical and/or mental health? Then you can help them by sending an outreach request and alert us as to any specific concerns you may have regarding the person’s well-being. As outreach capacity is limited, requests for those with more serious medical and/or mental health needs may be prioritized.

Glendale Youth Alliance (GYA) is Accepting Applications
COVID-19 Relief Program
The Glendale Youth Alliance (GYA) COVID-19 Program will assist local youth ages 18-25 that are affected by COVID to return their lives to normalcy. Individuals that have been laid off from work and/or receiving Unemployment Insurance between January 2020 until the present qualify! GYA will provide intense case management as well as gas cards, work attire, pay utilities and other supportive services to successfully transition youth back into the workforce. LA County Youth@Work Summer Youth Employment Program
GYA is accepting applications for the LA County Youth@Work program. Youth must be between the ages of 15-18 and receiving Calworks Cash aid. Program provides 120 hours of work experience based on their skills and aptitude as well as case management and training.
Summer Training and Employment Program for Students with Disabilities
GYA is accepting applications for the STEPS Program! Must be a student between the ages of 16-21 and have a physical or intellectual disability. Must be able to work independently in entry level retail or office positions. GYA will place youth at a worksite and the grant will pay $15 per hour for 120 hours of work experience. Students will also participate in work readiness training provided by Glendale Community College’s Professional Development Center. All youth will receive case management and supportive services based on need to succeed in the workforce.
Employment Assistance Program (EIP)
GYA is accepting applications for the EIP program. Must be between the ages of 18-24 AND NOT attending school; youth enrolled in non-credit courses qualify. Program pays for 200 hours of work experience as an incentive for businesses to hire our youth. The goal of the program is to transition youth to permanent employment at the completion of the grant program. GYA also provides intense case management as well as training and supportive services based on their individual needs.
Verdugo Jobs Center (VJC) offers a wide range of no-cost job training opportunities and job search and placement services in industries with a high need for qualified workers.
Currently, we have special grants for people who have employment barriers such as:
- Justice Involved and/or Formerly incarcerated
- Experienced, are experiencing or are at risk of experiencing homelessness
- Low Income
- English Language Learners
- Lost job due to layoff
RIISE is geared towards individuals who have experienced, are experiencing or are at risk of experiencing homelessness. Qualified clients work hand in hand with Verdugo Jobs Center case managers to map out a pathway that will help them move towards self-sufficiency. In addition to career counseling and case management, other services provided through the RIISE program are paid work experience, supportive service assistance and linkages to vocational training.
Prison to Employment (P2E) is an initiative that was created to assist individuals who were formerly incarcerated or **justice involved re-enter society and re-join the labor force. Through this grant, Verdugo Jobs Center is able to place qualified individuals at worksites to gain work experience and on the job training. Additional services include but are not limited to supportive services, career pathway research and funding for vocational training. **Justice involved can be anyone who is on parole or probation, under mandatory supervision, or post-release community supervision and are supervised by, or are under the jurisdiction of, a county or the CDCR.
Vocational training can assist someone gain the competitive edge they need to get back into the workforce. If it is time to update technical skills, learn a new in-demand software or maybe transition to a new in demand career contact Verdugo Jobs Center. There are special training grants that can cover the cost of vocational training for those who qualify. These grants are for individuals who have been laid off from their job or are low income or English Language Learners.
Elderly Nutrition Program (ENP)
Although Congregate Meal sites are still closed at this time, staff continue to enroll additional Elderly Nutrition Program (ENP) seniors and serve meals to the most vulnerable in our community.
The meal distribution plan for seniors currently enrolled in the Elderly Nutrition Program (ENP) is as follows:
- 7 days of frozen meals to seniors who have the means to warm up and store the food in refrigerator/freezer.
- Delivery by City staff or pick up option by the senior or friend/family/designee of senior on assigned days between 2:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m.
- A Brown Bag meal will be distributed to those who don’t have the means to warm up frozen meals and new clients* at two locations:
- Adult Recreation Center – 201 East Colorado, Glendale, CA 91205 – 7 days per week
- Brown Bag Lunch Pick-up time is from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on the East side of the building at Louise St. entrance.
- Sparr Heights Community Center – 1613 Glencoe Way, Glendale, CA 91208 – Monday – Friday ONLY
- Brown Bag Lunch Pick-up time is from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Paloma Ave. entrance
*New Clients must fill out the Universal Intake Form before receiving a meal:
- New Client’s must be 60 years of age and older.
- Availability is based on supply
