Halloween Recycling Tips
Here are some Green Halloween Tips for your family and friends:
1. Decorations —Instead of buying materials for decorations, gather supplies, arts and crafts throughout the year. Examples include:
- Turn stockings with runs into spider-webbing
- Turn cardboard boxes into tombstones
2. Costumes — Make your own!
- Let your kids' imaginations run wild! Make a game of turning old clothes into costumes.
3. Reuse — Reuse as much as you can from year to year. Instead of throwing away an old box or bag, use it to gather all your decorations and keep them for next year.
4. Treats — Buy locally produced foods, candies and treats. Look for goodies with minimal packaging and/or those made packaged in recycled materials.
5. Pumpkins —Buy pumpkins from local farms or farmers' markets.
6. Jack-o-lanterns — Don't throw away all the goodies from inside your pumpkin. Toast the seeds for tasty treats. Make pumpkin pie or muffins with the fruit - or compost it.
7. Compost and Recycle — From party food to treats to pumpkins, consider composting all organic matter and recycling other items.
Contact recycle@glendaleca.gov for your recycling and composting questions.
Have a safe Halloween!

Glendale’s Biogas Renewable Generation Project Hearing
The Biogas Renewable Generation Project will generate approximately 12 megawatts of renewable green energy for the City of Glendale on a three-acre portion of the City landfill. The Proposed Project would beneficially utilize the naturally recurring landfill gas locally without having to transport the gas offsite. This naturally occurring renewable fuel will generate electric energy for local consumption.
The planning commission will conduct a virtual hearing in the City Council Chambers located at City Hall on October 6, 2021 at 5:00 P.M. regarding the notice of intent to certify the final environmental impact report.
The meeting can be viewed on Charter Cable Channel 6 or streamed here. For public comments and questions during the meeting, call (818) 937-8100.

A Message from City Manager, Roubik Golanian
BOO!
Spooky month is here, and if you’re like me, you enjoy choosing a costume that fulfills a childhood dream and brings joy. Mine is being a fisherman. And believe me, if we could live in our Halloween costumes all year long, I would be a forever fisherman.
Daydreaming aside, this year’s Halloween will probably look a little more traditional than last year. I expect to see folks on the trick-or-treating trails, dodging front-yard mummies and ghouls as they make their way to some candy. Although folks may celebrate in person, it is always important to have a plan to keep your family safe by maintaining a distance from others, sanitizing often, and wearing a mask (a costume mask is not a substitute). Here are some additional simple and easy Halloween safety tips to help ensure you and your family have a ghostly time:
- Make sure costumes fit to prevent falls, and oozing scratches and scrapes;
- Don’t disappear into the night like a vampire, make sure you’re seen by using reflective tape on costumes, and have kids carry flashlights and glow sticks;
- All costumes, wigs, and accessories should be fire-resistant, but fierce;
- Make sure your children have identifying information on them, including their names, parents’ names, and contact info. There are many online stores where you can order custom temporary tattoos that are great for crowded places;
- You’re never too old to have fun! Adults should dress up and accompany their children on the trick-or-treating route. I recommend a Power Ranger family costume.
- If your older children plan to brave the trek to treats on their own, help them strategize a route acceptable to you;
- Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas, and to stick with their friends;
- Agree on a specific time your children should return home, preferably before witching hour;
- Remind your children never to enter a stranger’s home or car, you never know which homes are haunted;
- Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home, there may be poisoned apples in the mix. Inspect all candy- confiscate your personal favorites, of course- but more importantly, to ensure it is safe;
- The ghoulish fun, decorations, and candy are in front of you, so keep your head up! Children and adults are reminded to put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street;
We want everyone to have a fun, but safe Halloween experience. We have all worked so hard throughout this COVID-19 pandemic, but we must remain vigilant if we are to defeat this virus. Although our vaccination rates continue to steadily improve, we still have a long way to go. If you haven’t already, there are many opportunities to get vaccinated in Glendale, including our upcoming Pop-Up Health Fair on October 7, 2021 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. It really is the best way to ensure you and your family do not get severely sick as we head into the holiday season.
Stay safe and spooky, Glendale, and have a Happy Halloween!
