In July, The Office of Sustainability hosted a plastic-free campaign for residents to celebrate Plastic-Free Month! We had over 60 participants, many of whom provided excellent feedback and received reusable bags.
Plastic Free July is a global movement that draws attention to the issue of plastic pollution and provides ways to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic products. Although he campaign is over, it is still important to strive to be plastic-free in our everyday lives.
Visit our website for detailed information about the Plastic-Free Pledge and ways you can be plastic-free! You can also join us for our Zero Waste Picnic on August 21st at Verdugo Park! RSVP is required by August 6th.
By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans (The Washington Post). Do your part by refusing single- use plastic, reducing the amount of single-use items you purchase, and recycling items according to this Glendale Recycles brochure.
Glendale Community College’s Fall 2021 semester will feature more than 120 in-person classes as the college district unveils a wide range of learning options for students affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. An increase in vaccinated people has allowed GCC to begin a gradual return to a fully open in-person campus. Recognizing the need for diverse choices to fit the individual needs of students, the college will offer in-person, remote, hybrid, and online courses when the new semester begins August 30. First-time, full-time students are still eligible for free tuition. Continuing Education (noncredit) courses are also available at the GCC Garfield Campus. To see the growing list of in-person classes being offered and to learn more about the college’s health safety protocols for campus visitors, go to glendale.edu.
Help Plant Trees in Glendale!
The Public Works Department received a 55-tree planting grant for Arbor Day 2022. The grant, called the CIRCLE 4 Project, is part of a campaign led by the California Urban Forest Council (CaUFC), funded by CalFire. CaUFC partnered with West Coast Arborists and the City to expand our urban forest. The project involves a public educational workshop in Spring 2022, and a tree planting event on Saturday, March 12, 2022. The event will be volunteer-led and supervised by City staff and arborists. The grant trees are selected for their hardiness and ability to thrive in our climate, and part of a larger study with Cal Poly researchers. This grant follows 2019’s successful CIRCLE 3 Project, which planted 250 trees in Glendale. Public Works also continues to pursue other forestry and tree planting related grant opportunities. Safety Tips While on the Trails!
Bears are active now; here are some tips to keep you safe:
Most bears will avoid humans, especially if they hear you coming. Never come between a bear and its food. Move away slowly. Never turn your back on a bear and never run. This mimics prey and you don’t want to appear to be prey. If a bear has noticed you and is paying too much attention to you, talk calmly, so it recognizes you are a human. Pick up small children immediately. Appear as large as possible by moving to higher ground or by raising your arms. Always leave the bear an escape route. Never feed bears. The saying goes, a fed bear is a dead bear. Once they realize they can get food from you, they will become a nuisance and authorities will take action. If you live where bears roam, secure your trash and do not leave food outside.
Happy Trails from your friends in Trails and Open Space.

"Lumpen Station" Art Exhibit
The Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station's new art exhibit, “Lumpen Station,” was installed on July 12, 2021 and will be on display until August 20, 2021. “Lumpen Station” is based off of the series “The Revolting Lumpen” by artists, Beck + Col, which features bright, colorful, multidisciplinary experiences combining wearable sculpture, performance, dance, music and live operatic vocalizations. The versatility of textiles allows the artists to build elaborate worlds and the themes running through them. The entire installation was created using three textiles: velvet, cotton and mesh, as well as wood, foam and pex for structure.
This temporary art installation is generously sponsored by the Glendale Arts and Culture Commission through funding from the Urban Art Program, and support from Glendale Library, Arts & Culture, Glendale Community Services & Parks, and the Adams Hill Neighborhood Association

A Message from City Manager, Roubik Golanian
I can’t believe August is here, and back-to-school supplies are already lining the shelves. This time of year always brings with it changes, and while everyone settles back into the school-year routine, the City continues to work every day to maintain and build upon the critical services it provides to meet your needs. So whether you start this semester with in-person classes and daily commutes to campus, remain at home with virtual classes, or are helping your kids get ready for back to school, rest assured that the men and women serving your community will continue to keep you safe and provide high quality services.
Glendale continues to be one of the safest cities of its size in California and in the nation. Our Glendale Police and Fire Departments work tirelessly to solve crimes, fight fires, quickly respond to emergencies, and provide lifesaving medical care. GPD and GFD are unmatched and continuously work side-by-side to ensure preparedness in any circumstance.
On Tuesday, August 3rd, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., you have the opportunity to meet the dedicated men and women who serve this City by attending National Night Out! Every year, the Glendale Police Department hosts National Night Out, a community-driven event where neighbors get to know each other, local police personnel, firefighters, Glendale City Councilmembers, and City staff. This is an excellent opportunity to share your concerns, strategies, and ideas on how we can all work together to improve the safety of our neighborhoods. Visit the National Night Out website to find the NNO event nearest you. I hope to see you there!
While NNO will provide an outlet to discuss neighborhood safety, I want to take this opportunity to talk about health safety and the state of COVID-19 in our community. As I’m sure you’ve heard, the Delta variant is rapidly spreading across the nation. Cases in Glendale continue to rise every single day. While things may look bleak and flashbacks of last year begin to come to mind, remember that we are at an advantage today that we could only dream of one year ago – the COVID-19 vaccine. The best way to beat this pandemic and get back to a non-masked life is to increase our vaccination rates.
Research has shown that the COVID-19 vaccine is safe and extremely effective at preventing people from getting sick and ending up in the hospital or dying. That is why I am moving forward with requiring that every City employee provide proof of their COVID-19 vaccination. Those who do not, will have to undergo weekly testing for COVID-19. My objective behind this decision is straightforward. As City employees, we are in contact with residents, businesses, and visitors daily. We want to provide a safe environment for community members when obtaining City services. Similarly, our employees deserve a workplace and organization that actively implements safeguards that prevent harm, which, of course, includes the transmission of infectious diseases.
While we don’t know when this pandemic will end, I know it will take all of us to help Glendale bounce back as a premium place to live, work, and play for everyone. I encourage you to do your part in keeping our community safe. For information on how to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, visit glendaleca.gov/vaccine.
Enjoy the final weeks of Summer 2021 and stay safe, Glendale.

Special Disposal of Batteries
Batteries are hazardous waste that require special handling. When a battery enters a landfill and degrades, chemicals and other substances within the battery, leach into the environment and can pollute groundwater. Used batteries placed into garbage or recycling carts may spark and cause a fire. Learn more at Avoid the Spark.
Properly recycle household batteries through GFD or LA County's Household Hazardous Waste Programs or drop them off at Fire Stations, Libraries, Community Centers, or the Glendale Recycling Center. Visit our website for more information.
