All Personal Fireworks are Illegal in Glendale
It is important to remember that the City of Glendale has a zero tolerance policy for all fireworks. All personal fireworks, including “safe and sane” varieties are illegal in the city.
Statistics show that fireworks are among the most dangerous of all consumer products. Even hand-held sparklers, which many consider safe, are dangerous and can reach 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, causing serious burns or fires.
Help keep all of us, our children, our homes, and our properties stay safe from illegal fireworks. If you see something, say something! Call Glendale Police at (818) 548-4911 to report illegal fireworks and other suspicious activities.
The City of Glendale would like to wish you a happy and safe Fourth of July!

Energy Conservation Tips & Information
Summer is here, which means high temperatures and more energy consumption. You can save energy and money with these simple energy saving tips:
- Limit appliance use during peak hours of the day. Use them in early morning hours or after 9:00 p.m.
- Adjust air conditioning thermostats to 78 when home and set thermostats to 80 degrees when not home, keeping in mind the health of family members and pets.
- Use a ceiling fan instead of the AC whenever possible. Remember fans cool people not rooms.
- Close all curtains and blinds to keep out direct sunlight.
- Turn off lights to rooms that are not in use.
- Use LED lights wherever possible since they don’t give off heat and are more energy efficient.
- Air dry dishes to avoid using the dishwasher.
- Keep refrigerators full. A full fridge uses less energy.
- Unplug “energy vampires” - cell phone chargers, DVD players, microwave ovens, and other appliances with digital clocks that use energy even when turned off or in sleep mode.
- Make sure all HVAC vents are clean and filters have been replaced.
- When possible, businesses should shift power-intensive work processes to morning or evening hours.

A Message from City Manager, Roubik Golanian
Happy New Year, Glendale—Fiscal New Year, that is! The City’s Fiscal Year begins on July 1st of each year. This might sound familiar as I wrote to you back in May to provide an update on our Study Sessions, which help drive and establish the ultimate adoption of the City’s budget for the upcoming Fiscal Year. As we begin this new chapter, I want to present a brief overview of the outcome.
Thanks to the hard work by Glendale’s Finance Department, staff across the organization, we conducted over seven study sessions totaling almost 14 hours, where the City Council considered and distilled spending priorities on everything from public safety to recreation to infrastructure. The $972M adopted budget for FY 21-22, which includes a General Fund budget of roughly $255M (covering services like police, fire, libraries, and parks), is balanced and reflects investments in our residents’ and businesses’ quality of life.
Our General Fund revenues are primarily generated from taxes, property tax being the most significant, followed by sales tax and utility users tax. We anticipate an increase in revenue from these taxes and transient occupancy tax (or hotel room tax) from the last fiscal year. Overall, we expect this year’s revenues to increase, totaling approximately $230M.
The Citywide budget includes grants for projects that will help improve the quality of life for our residents. For example, the City Council has allocated almost double the budget for road rehabilitation and securing land for a park in South Glendale!
There is no more important topic than our City’s fiscal soundness. A municipality’s budget is much more than an accounting document; it serves as an outline for how the City should best use its resources to benefit the community. Head over to our website for the full Financial Report if you’d like to learn more about the FY 21-22 budget! Again, my goal is to preserve the services we provide to the community and ensure the Jewel City keeps on shining.
Before I close out this month’s message, I’d like to l bring to your attention the current drought and rising temperatures. The State of California is in its second consecutive dry year, meaning we have to do all we can to help preserve water and energy as the temperatures continue to rise. Remember to reduce your use of electricity and save energy by restricting the use of major appliances until after 9:00pm, set your thermostat to 78 degrees, turn off lights in rooms that are not used, and cook outdoors to prevent heat buildup indoors.
I hope you enjoy your summer and the upcoming city events such as the Jewel City Sparkles Fireworks Show and Cruise 2021. It’s an exciting time to be involved in Glendale. I strongly encourage you to stay engaged in pushing our community forward.

GWP's New Peak Savings Program!
Let us help you save energy and money with our new Peak Savings program!
How it works for Residents:
On days when demand on the electric grid is extremely high, the Peak Savings program uses your smart thermostat to automatically manage your energy use. While the program only adjusts the temperature by 3 degrees or less, it makes a big difference in reducing demand and keeping costs low. Most people don’t notice a difference.
Enrolled residential customers will receive a $50 incentive for signing up and will also receive $50 each year on their enrollment anniversary. Customers that don’t have a smart thermostat can receive a $100 instant rebate on the purchase price of a new thermostat, and will also receive $50 each year on their enrollment anniversary.
How it works for Businesses:
GWP will provide a free facility walkthrough, outline ways that your facility can reduce energy during peak demand periods (called events), and provide you with an energy reduction plan for events. You will be notified the day prior to a peak event, and you implement the energy reduction plan the day of the event during the specified times.
Business customers can receive up to $250 per event for implementing their energy reduction plan. Up to 15 peak events can be called each year, so the savings can really add up!
How to sign up:
For more details and to enroll in the program, visit GWPPeakSavings.com

Reduce Waste at Home
Residential trash increased over the COVID-19 pandemic due to the increase in people staying home. here are some simple ways to reduce waste at home to protect our resources and keep waste to a minimum:
-
Complete a trash inventory! See exactly what you throw away and categorize materials based on amount. Generally, you’ll find food waste, napkins, plastic packaging, and mail.
-
Try composting food scraps in your back yard or outdoor area! There are different composting methods, such as, backyard, worm or Bokashi. The end product, compost, can be used to nourish your garden (or your neighbor’s). Visit our website for information on how to obtain a compost bin.
-
Purchase reusable items! If your waste inventory has large amounts of single use items such as paper towels, plastic water bottles, and plastic straws, consider ways to reduce waste. This includes, using reusable bottles, napkins, kitchen and bath towels, and tote bags. When ordering take-out, be sure to request no utensils and napkins.
-
Reuse items! Reuse items such as glass jars and other food containers that would otherwise be thrown out. Take notice of your next purchases and think on how you can repurpose them creatively. Be sure to donate gently used items to a local nonprofit, a list of which can be found at https://earth911.com/.
