Winter rains will be here before long, and debris in gutters can cause blocked storm drains and street flooding. Leaves, trash, and pollutants such as herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers are harmful to the environment when washed into our local creeks and rivers, which flow into the Delta. This water is not treated before reaching these waterways, so keeping storm drains clear is essential.
Here’s how you can help:
-
Clear gutters and streets: Remove leaves, dirt, and trash in front of your home or business and dispose of it properly. Rake leaves and yard debris away from storm drain inlets and place them in yard waste (gray) containers. Note: City street sweepers cannot pick up leaves.
-
Avoid washing contaminants into drains: Do not hose pet waste, dirt, mud, or other debris into gutters or storm drains. Sweep or shovel debris into the trash instead.
-
Use chemicals responsibly: Apply pesticides and herbicides carefully and in moderation, avoiding application before rain. Sweep up oil or grease from driveways with absorbent materials and dispose of in the trash—never wash it into the gutter.
-
Protect stormwater: Never dump dirt, oil, paint, cement products, chemicals, or other pollutants into storm drains. City ordinances require keeping streets and gutters clear to protect water quality.

The City of Galt Solid Waste and Recycling Division reminds residents to safely recycle household batteries. Improperly disposed batteries can pose fire hazards in garbage trucks and recycling facilities.
Residents can drop off batteries at the City’s green “Household Battery Recycling” bins:
-
Galt Police Department – 455 Industrial Drive, Galt (front entrance)
-
Galt Community Park – 1000 Walnut Avenue, Galt (small parking lot east of the main entrance, near the Fire Station)
Accepted batteries include AAA, AA, C, D, 9-volt, button cell, rechargeable, and single-use. Residential use only; do not place batteries in plastic bags.
Learn more by checking out our video on safe battery recycling and the bin locations in Galt.
We’re highlighting another local business putting sustainability into action! Taco Bell on C Street is doing an excellent job utilizing the 3-bin recycling system.
