C Street Project Update: Meeting Goals for Better Safety of All
The C Street Enhancements Project continues to move towards completion in late winter 2025. On Friday, January 3, 2025 our contractor will be on site to put the eastbound detour back in place. Westbound travelers will be able to continue using the westbound lanes; eastbound traffic will once again follow the detour to A Street for a brief time.
This is to create a safe area for contractors to complete the remaining work, which includes installation of street lights, final striping, and pedestrian safety enhancements. We are progressing steadily towards a goal of safer, tempered traffic flow for everyone – drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Before beginning the C Street Enhancements Project in 2024, the City had been diligent to seek the considerations and input of residents, businesses, and stakeholders. Historically, C Street had not seen significant improvements since 1975. Prior to 2010, the City began earnest dialogues about the physical structure and functions of C Street, and documented traffic safety concerns for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
From the beginning, City leaders knew it would be impossible to create such important roadwork without the contributions of our valued residents, businesses, and stakeholders.

C Street Enhancements in Dollars: The total budget for the project was estimated at $3.7 million. Funding is comprised of $2.5 million in Community Design Funds from the Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) and $1.2 million from local transportation funds.
Our City organized and held community workshops for this very purpose. The work accomplished in 2024 and scheduled for 2025 directly reflects the inputs and considerations provided by Galt’s residents and business community, at these events:
Community Workshop & Walking Tour, Thursday, July 22, 2021. The City of Galt hosted a walking tour along C Street, followed by a community open house to solicit feedback from participants. During these events, community members shared their thoughts on the opportunities and challenges experienced along the corridor, through a variety of activities. More than 35 community members attended either the walking tour, community open house, or both events. You can review a summary of the events and feedback from the public here.
Community Workshop #2, Thursday, September 9, 2021 at the Chabolla Community Center. The design team revealed two conceptual designs developed as a result of input from the first community open house and walking tour. The two options can be viewed via the presentation from Workshop #2 summary here.
We have also completed and documented discussions and presentations on the C Street Enhancements Project during numerous City Council and Planning Commission meetings, spanning many years.
Because of its size, location, and governmental composition, the City of Galt is uniquely qualified to pursue improvement projects that reflect the values and concerns of residents, businesses, and stakeholders. From our City Council to our Public Works Department – and truly all departments of City government – we are accessible via phone, email, regular mail, and even social media to see, consider, and respond to those who participate in the betterment of life in Galt.
We invite you to learn more about the history and progress of the C Street Enhancements Project at the web pages, C Street Enhancements Project | Galt, CA and C Street Enhancements Project.
