During Earth Week 2024, a collaborative effort was launched to address the issue of food waste recycling. The initiative involved a partnership between the City of Galt, Cal-Waste, Galt Elementary and Galt High Schools, Galt Sunrise Rotary, and the Sacramento Area Sustainable Business Association.
The primary goal of this program, named "Close the Loop," is to educate students about the journey of their food scraps post-recycling in school cafeterias. Students enjoyed the day learning more about how their cafeteria food scraps became compost and participated in a hands-on experience by distributing that compost into their school gardens to close the loop, completing the cycle of sustainability. School coordinators and the Cal-Waste Recycle Education Team oversaw this process.
It is crucial for students to witness firsthand how their food waste transforms into compost, which can then be used to cultivate other fruits and vegetables in their school gardens. By fostering environmental awareness and responsibility early on, the program seeks to foster a sustainable future where eco-friendly choices drive the success of individuals, schools, and businesses within the community.
To support this initiative, thanks to a CalRecycle grant, the City of Galt contributed 24 tons of compost along with essential gardening tools such as shovels, rakes, gloves, wheelbarrows, and banners to each participating school.
Every action, no matter how small, contributes to the preservation of our planet.

C Street Enhancements Project
The C Street Enhancements Project is set to begin construction in the coming weeks. While the initial start date was projected for this week, ongoing preliminary construction activities have slightly shifted the timeline. As we approach the start date, we will provide further updates.
Throughout the construction period, C Street will operate with single-lane restrictions, maintaining westbound traffic while redirecting eastbound traffic via designated detours.
The project will unfold in two phases:
-
Phase 1: Focuses on the north side of C Street. Continuous access to businesses on the south side will be ensured. Eastbound traffic will be rerouted to A Street. Expected completion: early summer.
-
Phase 2: Will address the south side of C Street. Access to businesses on the north side will be preserved. Eastbound traffic will continue to be diverted to A Street. Expected completion: fall 2024.
We will provide regular updates on the project's progress and encourage residents to continue supporting local businesses during this period. Access to businesses and properties within the construction zone will be maintained. We urge all motorists to exercise caution, utilize alternative entrances when feasible, and contact the project team with any inquiries.

The Galt Police Department offers a no-cost program in which CAPS Volunteers or Police Officers will check on your property while you are away on vacation, business, or attending family matters.
Residents planning to be away for an extended period can complete a Vacation Check Request form, available from the Galt Police Department Records Division. The form should be submitted at least two days before departure and must be fully completed. Typically, security checks are conducted on weekdays during regular business hours. However, checks can also be scheduled on weekends or after business hours based on staffing availability. During these inspections, uniformed Volunteers visually assess the property for signs of damage or unauthorized entry but do not access fenced or backyard areas. Residents are notified of any incidents or emergencies on their property provided they have supplied a valid contact number. In emergencies requiring immediate police response, Volunteers will contact the individual listed as the "Emergency Contact." Additionally, designated vital holders will be informed of security-related issues affecting the property.
