Fullerton PD Competes in "Baker to Vegas" Challenge
The Fullerton Police Department competed in the "Baker to Vegas" challenge cup relay race this past weekend. Fullerton PD placed fifth in their category with a run time of 17 hours, 43 minutes, and 56 seconds.
The race encompasses 120 miles, 20 stages, and over 8,000 runners, guests, family members, and support staff. Hot days and cold nights, blood, sweat, pride, and honor.
The Challenge Cup Baker to Vegas Relay was Los Angeles Police Officers Chuck Foote and Larry Moore's design beginning in 1978. Over the past decades, hundreds of thousands of law enforcement personnel have run across the desert in the yearly race, advancing the ideas of teamwork, camaraderie, physical fitness, and competition. It is the largest police foot pursuit in the world!

City Council recently awarded a construction contract for the Orangethorpe Avenue/Esperanza Road Regional Traffic Signal Synchronization Program Project (RTSSP). The project will make equipment improvements to sixteen traffic signals located within the City of Fullerton. The project aims to improve travel times, decrease the number of stops, and lower fuel consumption and emissions along the existing Orangethorpe Avenue corridor. The City has successfully participated in similar projects in the past that have included improvements to Brea Boulevard, Malvern Avenue/Chapman Avenue, and Gilbert Street. West Coyote Hills Trails Coming Fall 2022
California Gnatcatchers are springing into action. Keep the threatened species thriving at the newly acquired West Coyote Hills.
First, let's go over the facts:
West Coyote is currently closed to the public. The acquisition closed in December 2021. This means new trails are coming soon, but not quite yet. The construction of trails has come to a halt to allow the California Gnatcatchers to mate without interruption. The first phase of the trails is scheduled to open in Fall 2022.
What is a California Gnatcatcher?
The California Gnatcatcher is a threatened species of bird that the Department of Fish and Wildlife protects.
These birds:
- Live in coastal sage scrub
- Mate from March through August
- Stay in pairs throughout their lives
- Can live up to eight years
- Feed on small insects and small berries
Do your part to keep Fullerton wild by staying out of the West Coyote Hills construction site, taking advantage of the miles of Fullerton trails currently available, not disturbing any habitats you come across, and informing your family, friends, and neighbors.
Keep these rules in mind:
The public is not allowed in West Coyote Hills at this time. Patrons will be welcomed when the construction of the trails is complete in the Fall of 2022.
If you are interested in spending time at the Robert E. Ward Nature Preserve while waiting for the West Coyote Hills trails to be constructed, please note that only pedestrians are allowed. No horses or bikes are allowed in the preserve.
If you have any questions, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at (714) 738-6582 or email at parks@cityoffullerton.com.
