Plan Ahead - Weekend Roadway and Freeway Closures

To help minimize local congestion in Fremont, during this weekend’s planned 55-hour closure of Interstate 680 (northbound) from Friday, August 8 at 10:00 pm to Monday, August 11 at 5:00 am for the Bridge Rehabilitation Project, Caltrans has notified the City of Fremont of several additional northbound I-680 ramp closures, on-ramp restrictions, and left-turn limitations in the Mission San Jose, Irvington and Warm Springs area. These changes are being implemented to help guide drivers toward I-880 and other regional detour options, thus reducing pressure on local roads in an effort to improve overall traffic movement.

• Niles Blvd Closed at Mission Blvd.
• Highway 84 Northbound Off-Ramp to Sunol Closed
• Make Left Turn at Main Street to Enter Sunol

These weekend closures are expected to cause local congestion and may cause inconvenience for Fremont residents. Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time, plan alternative routes, and remain patient during this period. We appreciate everyone's understanding and cooperation as CalTrans works to complete critical bridge and pavement repairs

Ensuring Safe and Fair Mobile Vending in Fremont

The City is committed to supporting safe, fair, and lawful business practices for all vendors operating within our community. To support this goal, we are helping mobile vendors comply with state and local regulations, including the City’s Vendors and Solicitors Ordinance which states that permits are required to operate a mobile vending business. Mobile vendors include food trucks, ice cream trucks, and sidewalk vendors.

State law, specifically Senate Bill 946 (the Safe Sidewalk Vending Act) and Senate Bill 972, currently shape how cities can regulate mobile vending. These laws 1) require that local regulations and enforcement actions prioritize health, safety, and accessibility concerns rather than simply prohibiting vending in public spaces and 2) ensure that most sidewalk vending violations are no longer considered crimes.

While these laws were intended to support entrepreneurship and reduce unnecessary penalties, they have also led to a surge of unpermitted vendors throughout the region, including Fremont. This increase has created several challenges, including food safety and sanitation concerns; obstructed sidewalk access; traffic safety issues; and improper disposal of cooking oils and grease onto sidewalks and storm drains.

To address these challenges, the City is focused on helping mobile vendors comply with regulations. Our Code Enforcement team, in partnership with the Fremont Police Department and the Alameda County Environmental Health Department, is taking the following steps:

• conducting education and outreach to mobile vendors about the required City and Alameda County permits needed to operate legally and safely in Fremont,
• providing warnings for violations and issuing administrative citations if the violations are not addressed, and
• impounding unpermitted or unsafe food and equipment when there is a threat to public health or safety, as allowed under the law.

Community members with concerns related to mobile vending can report their concerns online or by email.

This Sunday: Hot August Niles Car Show – August 10

Get ready for this year’s Hot August Niles Car Show, one of the Bay Area’s most popular car events! Festival of India Mela and Parade

The annual Festival of India Mela and Parade is coming up on Saturday, August 16 and Sunday, August 17, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm at 39439 Paseo Padre Parkway! The event is produced by the Federation of Indo-Americans of Northern California. 

This weekend event is a global celebration of unity and diversity, featuring a parade of cultural floats, live music and dance performances, Indian cuisine, handicrafts and shopping bazaar, and family-friendly activities including a Kids' Zone.

School is almost in session! With Fremont public schools starting this Tuesday, August 12, the City is encouraging a safe, healthy, and environmentally conscious start to the school year.

Safe Routes to School Fremont's Safe Routes to School program is aimed at making it safer and easier for students to walk and bike to school. By offering tools like recommended route maps, the program helps families plan safer, more convenient school commutes. Walking or biking doesn’t just improve physical health—it’s also been linked to greater happiness and better academic performance among students. Fewer car trips also mean less traffic congestion near schools and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, which supports Fremont’s Climate Action Plan goal of reducing emissions by 30% from 2018 levels by 2030. Learn more about the program.

Traffic Safety Tips:

• Drivers: Be alert and slow down near schools. Watch for students walking, biking, or crossing the street.
• Cyclists: In California, cyclists under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet on bikes and e-bikes. Also, safe cycling includes lights and reflective gear on bikes and riders and maintaining a safe speed.
• Parents/guardians: Set aside time to talk with your kids about safety before the first day. Practice walking or biking the route together.
• All commuters: If you must drive, consider parking further from school and walking a few blocks; it reduces congestion and gives you a few extra steps.

E-Bike Rebate Program Consider an electric bike for your school commute! Through their new Ava Bike Electric Program, Fremont’s electricity provider, Ava Community Energy (Ava), is offering their residential customers and/or Alameda County residents the opportunity to enter a random drawing for a chance to save $400 to $1,500 on a new e-bike. Once you apply and are deemed eligible, you’ll be entered into monthly random drawings for a chance to receive an instant rebate. Drawings will be held every month until September 2026. Two Fremont bike shops are participating in the program and accepting the rebates: CentriPEDAL Bikes and The Bicycle Garage. This makes it easy to shop and support local businesses! Learn more and apply.

Zero-Waste Tips:

• Take inventory of what you already have at home.
• Use tins or reusable containers instead of plastic lunch boxes or bags.
• Buy secondhand supplies and books when possible.
• Choose eco-friendly, non-toxic, or recycled materials.

Mediterranean Fruit Fly Eradicated from Alameda County

The Mediterranean fruit fly quarantine has been lifted in Alameda County – but the threat of invasive pests remains.
