 Fremont Celebrates Black History Month
Happy Black History Month! We’re honored to display the Black History Month flag outside City Hall in February.
In accordance with the City of Fremont’s Flag Display Administrative Regulation, all U.S. flags at City facilities will be at half-staff through Friday, February 14, 2025, at 5:00 pm in memory of former Fremont City Councilmember Steve Cho. The Black History Month flag will be relocated to the Fremont Council Chambers until it’s restored outside on February 14 at 5:00 pm.
The City of Fremont is mourning the loss of former Fremont City Councilmember Steve Cho. Mr. Cho was appointed to the Fremont Planning Commission in December 1998 and was elected to the Fremont City Council on November 7, 2000. Mr. Cho served as a Fremont Councilmember for eight years. He was active in the Fremont community and a member of many community and professional organizations including: Citizens for Better Community, Fremont City Charter Committee in 1997, East Bay Economic Development Alliance, AC Transit Policy Advisory Committee, and served as an at-large board member to the League of California Cities Board of Directors from 2007-2008.
Mr. Cho’s distinguished service and the way he carried out his duties and responsibilities while serving the Fremont community, will be remembered for years to come. The City extends its sincerest condolences to the Cho family during this difficult time.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is the regional transportation agency for the Bay Area, establishing funding priorities for major transportation investments over a 30-year period. Together with the Association of Bay Area Government (ABAG), the MTC is currently updating its plan for the region known as Plan Bay Area 2050+, which will formally be released for feedback this summer.
On January 22, 2025, the Commission approved a list of priority projects for proposed implementation in the next 10 years (2025-2035), as well as other projects for the subsequent 20 years. Among the major Fremont projects selected as near-term priorities was the new Irvington BART Station, which is planned for the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Osgood Road. Additional priority projects benefitting the Fremont community include improvements to existing BART service (BART Core Capacity) and improvements to freeway interchanges at I-880/Decoto Road and I-680/Mission Boulevard (State Route 262).

Fremont's innovative approach to climate resilience is receiving national attention! Our fire station microgrid project is featured in a new report, “Building Community Resilience: How Local Leaders are Advancing Resilience Hubs and Bolstering Critical Infrastructure.” The report is published by the Alliance for a Sustainable Future, which is a partnership between the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions. One of their goals is to inform mayors, local officials, and business leaders of innovative new strategies that could present an opportunity for their own communities to reach their climate goals.
In the report, Fremont is highlighted as a prime example of how cities are strengthening critical infrastructure facilities. The report includes a case study describing how Fremont’s fire station microgrids—solar panels and battery energy storage systems—ensure emergency services remain operational during power outages. This national spotlight highlights the City’s commitment to building a more resilient, climate-ready future for our community.
The City thanks the Alliance for a Sustainable Future for featuring Fremont and helping to advance community resilience efforts nationwide.

Kickoff Your ‘Go Safely Game Plan’
As football fans gear up for this weekend’s big game, the Fremont Police Department reminds everyone to celebrate responsibly by creating a "Go Safely Game Plan" to prevent driving under the influence (DUI). Whether you're hosting a party, attending a gathering or enjoying the game at your favorite spot, planning ahead can make sure everyone gets home safely.
On Sunday, February 9, the Fremont Police Department will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The Fremont Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products and other drugs may also cause impairment. If you plan on drinking or taking medications with a driving warning label, let someone who is sober drive.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

 Go Green This Game Day!
Ready for some football? As you huddle with friends and family for the big game, remember that the environment needs a win too! Score big by tackling recycling and becoming a composting champion. Toss clean and dry cans and bottles in the blue bin. Toss food scraps and food-soiled paper like pizza boxes, paper plates, and napkins in the green bin. Every action counts, no matter how big or small. Thanks for doing your part to help us create a climate ready Fremont. We make a great team!

New Industrial Building Approved for South Fremont
Fremont's industrial sector is set to expand with the recent approval of a new project. Located in South Fremont at Fremont Boulevard and Ice House Terrace, the Palisade project involves redeveloping a 4.2-acre vacant site with a new 70,000 sq. ft. industrial building. To facilitate the project, the site was rezoned from regional commercial to tech industrial, which facilitates a significant investment in an underutilized site, creates job growth in Fremont’s thriving industrial sector, and generates revenue sources for the City. Additionally, the developer has pledged a $100k community benefit to be used for a community initiative or program.
