2024 Alameda County Point-in-Time Homeless Count Results
High-level findings are in for the 2024 Alameda County Point-in-Time (PIT) Homeless Count. We are pleased to share that Fremont experienced a significant 21% reduction in homelessness since the last count in 2022.
The following quote from Fremont Mayor Lily Mei is included in the official press release from Alameda County Health:
"I am pleased to announce that the City of Fremont has achieved a significant 21% reduction in homelessness. This noteworthy accomplishment is a testament to our unwavering commitment and strong partnerships with federal, state, and regional agencies. Our investments in prevention, shelter, and housing programs have yielded proven results. However, our work is far from finished. As Mayor, I have led multiple efforts to combat homelessness and this remains a top priority for the entire City Council. We are determined to tackle the remaining challenges head-on. To that end, I will continue to champion our cause, leading the Council in advocating for regional partnerships and securing ongoing funding to bridge gaps and protect our valuable resources. Together, we can bring about lasting change and ensure that every resident of Fremont has a safe and stable home."

Detailed findings for Fremont are expected this summer. Stay tuned for this information.
A plan for how Fremont will continue to respond to homelessness is currently underway. A draft Homelessness Response Plan will be presented to the Fremont City Council on Tuesday, May 21 at 7:00 pm at Council Chambers, located at 3300 Capitol Ave. City staff will be asking the Council to consider the draft plan for adoption. In alignment with its commitment to public safety and to eliminate traffic fatalities, Fremont’s City Council has adopted an ordinance to lower speed limits on 30 City street segments. The installation of updated speed limit signs was completed in early May. This is just one of many efforts that the City of Fremont has undertaken to enhance traffic safety since the Vision Zero program was adopted in 2016 and renewed in 2021. Speed is an essential aspect of traffic safety, as higher speeds increase both the likelihood and the severity of crashes. National research shows that lowering the speed limits in urban areas saves lives because it gives drivers more time to react to the unexpected.

Fremont Receives Tree City USA Recognition for 27th Consecutive Year
To celebrate the City being recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a “Tree City USA” for the 27th consecutive year, May 14, 2024, was proclaimed Arbor Day in Fremont by the City Council at its May 14 City Council Meeting. The City of Fremont's annual Arbor Day proclamation promotes public awareness and pride through knowledge and appreciation of trees and their community benefits.
The City celebrates Arbor Day year-round by planting and maintaining trees and by engaging residents through community planting events and educational opportunities. Trees benefit residents by providing shade, removing air pollutants, saving energy, reducing noise, and supporting wildlife habitat. Trees are powerful in their ability to improve the livability, health, and ecology of our city.
Arbor Day was first observed in 1872 with the planting of more than one million trees. It is intended to provide a reminder and opportunity for people to come together in recognition of the wonders of trees and is now observed throughout the nation and the world. The Tree City USA program started in 1976 to recognize municipalities that maintain and grow their tree canopy and a way to publicly demonstrate their commitment to trees. The Arbor Day Foundation is the world’s largest nonprofit dedicated to planting trees and supports both Arbor Day and Tree City USA.
