Two New Downtown Fremont Development Projects Approved
On April 16, the Fremont City Council upheld the Planning Commission's unanimous support of two exciting new development projects located within the Fremont Hub shopping center and the Gateway Plaza shopping center. These projects are poised to continue the transformation of Fremont's Downtown and City Center areas by bringing dense housing to locations with easy access to transit, goods, services, and jobs, which supports the City’s housing goals. Led by Kimco Realty, the projects will provide over 500 units of multi-family housing, community amenity space, and new retail space to complement the burgeoning businesses sprouting along Capitol Avenue. Notably, both projects will transform what is primarily surface parking while modernizing the existing look and feel of the shopping centers. Development will occur in phases over several years and when completed, these projects will add significant vibrancy to the area. While there is much work to be done, the momentum of these new project proposals demonstrates the rise of Downtown Fremont as a central gathering place for the Bay Area's fourth largest city.
For more information about the projects, read the following staff reports.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Fremont Engineering Expo earlier this month! In partnership with Berbawy Makers, Fremont Unified School District (FUSD), and Mission Valley ROP, the inaugural event welcomed over 900 attendees to Downtown Fremont to celebrate the innovative work of students and promote workforce development in engineering and manufacturing fields.
Many Fremont businesses participated as well. Local advanced manufacturing companies such as Delta Electronics educated students on future career opportunities in manufacturing. Gridscape discussed its microgrid project with our Fremont Fire Department, Tesla let attendees sit inside one of its vehicles, and Ohlone College promoted its Smart Manufacturing Technology program and other engineering education opportunities.
Our community spirit was felt throughout, but the true stars of the event were the 300 Fremont students who showcased their projects, demonstrating their creativity, passion, and technical skills. Fantastic job to all the students who participated! Interested in learning more about the event and Fremont’s role in inspiring makers and engineers? Read more.
On Sunday, April 13, the City partnered with local urban forestry nonprofit Urban Forest Friends to hold a community tree celebration and Arbor Day planting event at Cabrillo Trail Park. Twenty native and climate-adapted trees were planted. The event also featured educational opportunities for the community to learn about trees and wildlife. Free face painting and cotton candy was well received by the youth in attendance. Over 60 volunteers, local and state leaders, as well as City staff participated in this event. The event was funded by a grant that Urban Forest Friends received from Pacific Gas and Electric Company through its California ReLeaf Growing Green Communities grant program. Also highlighted at the event was the City of Fremont’s new Free Street Tree program funded by a CalFire grant. To learn more about this opportunity for a free street tree, visit our website. Congratulations to all on a job well done! For more information on City of Fremont Urban Forestry, visit our website, call 510-494-4730, or send us an email.
On Saturday, April 20, a traffic signal switchover at two intersections in Irvington (Fremont Blvd./Grimmer Blvd. and Fremont Blvd./Eugene St.) was completed. Thank you for your patience as the construction work occurred. Due to the low traffic volume, the work was completed ahead of schedule. The contractor will be finishing the remaining concrete improvements, street surface sealing, and striping in the upcoming month. This work is part of the larger Fremont Boulevard Complete Streets Program, designed to provide safety enhancements for all roadway users walking and rolling in and around the neighborhood. The program connects residents to commercial, residential, schools, and regional transit destinations within the Irvington District and Downtown Fremont.
The City is continuing to share our Fremont Cares stories to help amplify the experiences of our unhoused residents. These stories shed light on the real-life experiences of Fremont's unhoused residents and highlight homeless response efforts. Our two latest stories are available below. Read and share these stories of hope to help promote a community where everyone feels valued and supported. To receive future stories by email or text message, sign up for the City’s Homelessness Interest List. To learn how you can help, visit the City’s How to Help webpage.
