This week, Fremont City Manager Karena Shackelford announced the appointment and promotion of Deputy Fire Chief Zoraida Diaz as Fremont’s next Fire Chief. Chief Diaz will officially begin her new role as Fremont Fire’s ninth Fire Chief and serve as the highest-ranking woman in the fire department’s history, effective April 7, 2023.
“I am pleased to announce Zoraida Diaz as Fremont’s next Fire Chief,” stated City Manager Karena Shackelford. “Zoraida has a broad and accomplished career, bringing a wealth of knowledge and professional experience from more than two decades in the fire service and 15 years working in social services. Weather-Related Incidents and Services
Earlier this week, the city of Fremont experienced unusually high winds, resulting in multiple downed trees, downed power lines, and other incidents. Our Police Department received numerous calls for service, including 78 storm-related calls. The Community Services Department’s Park Maintenance team, which handles tree-related calls in public areas, received over 110 tree-related calls for service. Our Fire Department and Public Works crews actively assisted with clearing trees from roadways into the night. We want to take this time to thank our officers, dispatchers, our Fire Department, and all first responders, including our streets and parks crews, and PG&E for their services during this critical time. Calls are prioritized based on emergency service needs, and we thank the public for being patient as we attend to all calls for service. Cleanup work will continue for several days to address all issues, including lower-priority calls.

The Bay Area has experienced a steady amount of extreme weather this year, and with that, an influx of safety concerns. Our Maintenance Team is focused on cleanup efforts to prevent flooding and mudslides. The number of potholes on Fremont streets has increased due to the combination of heavy rain and freezing temperatures. With breaks in weather, crews are working to apply temporary patches to potholes to keep our streets safe and prevent car tire and wheel damage. These temporary patches are an interim measure until permanent repairs can be made through our annual street maintenance projects. The quickest way to report potholes and other issues is through the Fremont App.

ACWD Hosts Special Board Meeting to Consider Rescinding Drought Surcharges
The Alameda County Water District’s Board of Directors will consider rescinding the imposition of drought surcharges during a special Board meeting on Tuesday, March 21, at 6:00 pm. The surcharges have been in effect since March 1, 2022, and were imposed to cover operations and necessary capital improvements during the declared water shortage emergency and mandated 15% demand reduction.
With drought conditions easing following significant local and statewide precipitation, customers’ continued conservation, and the District’s financial situation, the Board will consider sunsetting the current surcharge of $0.82 per unit (about 748 gallons) of water. The water shortage emergency declaration remains in effect, with further evaluation in the coming months.
