This Sunday’s Super Bowl is a Win-Win When You Plan Ahead
Sustainable Super Bowl Sunday
Are you ready for some football? The big game is almost here, and everyone knows that the key to celebrating is the food and drinks. To reduce waste and make your Super Bowl Sunday more sustainable, don’t forget to recycle bottles/cans and compost food scraps. Clean and dry bottles, cans, plastic jugs, and tubs belong in the blue recycling cart. Food scraps and food-soiled paper like pizza boxes, paper plates, and napkins belong in the green organics cart. Thanks for doing your part to help us create a climate-ready Fremont. We make a great team!
Score a Sober Ride Home
Fremont Police Department is reminding football fans that there’s no “DUI” in team. If you’re heading out to a Super Bowl party and you plan on drinking, make sure you stick to the “Go Safely” game plan and choose a sober way to go. During Super Bowl LVI weekend (Feb. 11-12), Fremont Police Department will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Please remember that alcohol is not the only substance that impairs. Marijuana, prescription medications, and over-the-counter drugs may also impair your ability to drive safely. Do your research and understand how certain drugs may affect you.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The City's Planning Division would like to provide an update on two sites in Fremont that were intended for new development projects.
- In 2019, a mixed-use project, including residential units and commercial space, was approved for a site in the Centerville District along Fremont Boulevard between Peralta Boulevard and Parish Avenue. Due to the developer of the project filing bankruptcy, the site is now under control of the lender for the project. City staff recently met with the lender to discuss their plans for the site and to ensure that they continue to prioritize site security and maintenance. The lender is currently exploring alternative designs for the site, and the City will keep the community updated on any change in ownership or specific new plans for the site when submitted.
- In 2007, the Mission Hills mixed-use project was approved for a site located on Sabercat Road near Interstate 680 and Automall Parkway. The project was halted a few years ago due to the developer's bankruptcy and legal issues and has since sat in a partially built state. The project lender now owns the property and is looking to sell the property and project to a qualified purchaser. A successful sale to an experienced developer would increase the likelihood that the project would be completed successfully. The City will keep the community updated as the situation evolves.
The Always Dream Play Park and David Jones playgrounds are once again open to the public. The re-surfacing upgrade projects has been successfully completed by Spectrasurf.
Blacow and Sylvester P. Harvey Park playgrounds are now closed (beginning Monday, February 6, 2023), for approximately two to four weeks (weather permitting) to undergo a major surfacing upgrade project to the entire site. We apologize for the inconvenience. Your support and patience are greatly appreciated. For project updates, visit our parks webpage. For further information, please contact our Park Maintenance Division by email or call 510-979-5700.

Recently the federal government announced that the national emergency and public health emergency will end on May 11. This wind-down aligns with the Administration’s plans to give at least 60 days’ notice prior to termination of the public health emergency. Ending the COVID-19 emergency declarations does not mean the virus has been eradicated. States of emergencies are intended to be temporary, and when emergency powers expire, that does not mean that all policies related to COVID-19 end. In the next three months, Alameda County will continue to closely monitor any changes to policies as they have throughout the pandemic.
Take these precautions to continue protecting ourselves and managing the pandemic as it continues to evolve: Get the latest COVID-19 booster, use at-home tests if you’ve been exposed or have symptoms, stay home if you’re sick, and wear a high-quality mask when COVID-19 levels are high.
If local conditions allow, Alameda County will lift its COVID-19 local health emergency declaration on the projected end date of the State's emergency declaration, February 28, 2023. Through the COVID-19 State of Emergency, California’s pandemic response saved tens of thousands of lives, protected the economy, distributed nation-leading financial assistance, and built up an unprecedented public health infrastructure. The state’s SMARTER Plan will ensure a level of operational preparedness to support communities and appropriately respond to future outbreaks. California continues to phase out underutilized state-run COVID-19 testing and treatment sites in the coming weeks. The phase out comes as COVID-19 activity is decreasing across the state. COVID-19 is expected to be the third leading cause of death in the United States in 2022, and will remain a threat indefinitely, particularly for older and more vulnerable community members. Residents should use the same tools we have relied on for much of the pandemic to keep themselves and others as healthy as possible.
