 Lunar New Year Event Tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 28
Join us for the City's first-ever Lunar New Year event tomorrow, Saturday, January 28, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Downtown Event Center, located at 3500 Capitol Ave. This celebration is geared for the entire family and will include food trucks, activities, live performances, and much more. In light of recent tragic events throughout our state, Fremont Police Department will have increased staffing to reassure our community further of our City’s commitment to public safety. Fremont embraces its diversity, and we will not tolerate any acts of violence.

In August 2021, our City launched the Afghan Refugee Help Fund (ARHelp Fund) to support refugees fleeing Afghanistan and arriving in our local area. With generous donations from 1,213 donors, the fund raised $482,901, which was used to support housing and basic needs, after-school programs, case management, mental health support, and more. Today, we’re proud to share the Afghan Refugee Help Fund Final Report, which further details the incredible impact these donations had. We encourage everyone to read the report and learn how our nationwide effort made a lasting impact on our Afghan residents.

The City of Fremont is pleased to announce the Special Event Sponsorship Program (SESP) for community events to be held from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024. To be considered for sponsorship, event organizers must meet all eligibility criteria and apply to the program. The deadline to submit your SESP application, along with your special event permit application and all relevant materials, is Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at 12:00 pm. The final allocation of sponsorship funds will be determined and announced following the City’s Fiscal Year 2023/24 budget adoption in June 2023.
The Water Safety Team at Aqua Adventure Waterpark has been awarded the Gold International Aquatic Safety Award for 2022 by Jeff Ellis & Associates, Inc.
Each season the waterpark receives three unannounced audits by the City of Fremont's lifeguarding agency Jeff Ellis & Associates. These audits include undercover observations of lifeguards and staged simulated emergencies to observe how Aqua Adventure Waterpark's teams recognize, respond, and render aide to various staged emergencies. This award places Aqua Adventure Waterpark in the top 20% of aquatic facilities throughout the world.
Congratulations to the Aqua Adventure Water Safety Supervisor, Coordinator, Leads, and the entire water safety team for all that they do each season to ensure guests have a safe and fun experience at Aqua Adventure Waterpark!
For three consecutive weekends beginning February 3, Caltrans plans to close northbound Interstate 680 in Sunol and Pleasanton between State Route 84 and Sunol Boulevard for maintenance-related paving work. The work includes removing and replacing the entire roadway sections of the freeway. The closure is scheduled, weather permitting, from 10:00 pm on Friday to 5:00 am on the following Monday for the weekends of February 3 and February 10 in the northbound direction between Koopman Road and Sunol Boulevard. For the President’s Day weekend (February 17), the closure is scheduled from 10:00 pm Friday to 5:00 am the following Tuesday in the northbound direction between Sunol Boulevard and Bernal Avenue.

The 2023 Golden Sneaker Contest is happening from February 27 to March 10 and is sponsored by Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S). During this event, Alameda County students, classrooms, and schools compete to see who can walk, roll, carpool, and/or use public transit the most. Every school registered is eligible to receive free supplies to help plan a successful event, and winning classrooms receive a trophy. Participating in the contest is a fun way to help reduce traffic congestion by promoting active and shared transportation. Register your school by February 3!

 COVID Corner
Older adults remain disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.
- Data on COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths in Alameda County show that collective efforts of communities are needed to protect older adults and people living in high poverty areas as they experience worse outcomes than other county residents.
- The Public Health Department’s recent data found that death rates among residents ages 81 and older were more than 3 times as high as residents ages 71-80, almost 8 times as high as residents ages 61-70, and almost 19 times as high as residents ages 51-60.
