Ring in Lunar New Year at New City Event on Jan. 28
Join us for the City's first-ever Lunar New Year event on Saturday, January 28 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Downtown Event Center and Plaza, located at 3500 Capitol Ave. This celebration will be fun for the entire family and will include food trucks, activities, live performances, and much more. In addition to the free event activities, Kids’ Corner is an exciting addition that will cost $4 per child (ages 3-12). This fee includes a variety of festive crafts, a commemorative photo keepsake, and a grab bag full of fun take home items. Kids’ Corner tickets can be purchased prior to the event.

The City of Fremont currently has vacancies on its Economic Development Advisory Commission, Environmental Sustainability Commission, George W. Patterson House Advisory Board, Human Relations Commission, Library Advisory Commission, Mobility Commission, Recreation Commission, Rent Review Board, and Senior Citizens Commission. The City Clerk’s Office welcomes applications for all Boards, Commission, and Committees throughout the year. We finally have a stretch of dry and mostly sunny weather forecasted in the coming week. However, expect cold overnight low temperatures in the mid-30s into the next week.
City crews continue cleanup efforts in Fremont and damage assessment on City-owned infrastructure. Alameda Creek at Niles is now well below flood stage, although fast moving water flow conditions continue.
The following road and bridge closures are in effect:
- Morrison Canyon Road – CLOSED. Continued closure planned for duration of the rainy season, or until further notice.
- Mill Creek Road – RESIDENTS ONLY – road closed to general public.
- Sullivan Underpass (between Niles Blvd. & Mission Blvd.) – OPEN. Future temporary closures are possible in the event of additional rains.
The following roads and bridges are now open:
- Niles Canyon Road (State Hwy. 84) between Old Canyon Rd. and Sunol.
- Old Canyon Road over Alameda Creek (Stanley Bridge).
The following parks are closed:
- Plaza Park in the Glenmoor neighborhood.
- Rancho Higuera Historical Park.
- The Patterson Ranch Road entrance to Coyote Hills Regional Park remains closed to all access due to flooding. All other areas of the park remain open.
- Visit the East Bay Regional Parks website to see which parks have reopened in Fremont. Check the alerts and closures section on their website before you head out and follow all signage in parks and on trails.
Due to the conditions of the mudslide in Niles Canyon and for the safety of passengers and crews, the Altamont Corridor Express (ACE®) has cancelled rail and shuttle service and announced it will resume service on Monday, January 23, 2023.

The City Council/Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) Liaison Committee Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 24, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. The agenda will include an update on the Walk and Roll to School Program, including reports and discussion on school participation and school access safety programs.

 Flag Raising for Black History Month
The City will be raising the flag for Black History Month on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at 12:00 pm at Fremont City Hall, 3300 Capitol Ave.
The presentation and video recording of the beekeeping community meeting held on January 18, 2023 is available to review on the Tri-City Animal Shelter’s website. We’re also seeking community feedback on the proposed Beekeeping Ordinance amendments to present to the Fremont City Council on February 21, 2023. A program funded by community donations, those who wish to voluntarily turn in unwanted firearms can do so this Saturday, January 21, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm or until funds run out at the Fremont Police Department’s Gun Buyback Event. The event will take place at the Fremont Fire Training Center (Tactical Training Center), located at 7200 Stevenson Blvd. in Fremont.
Firearms should be unloaded and transported in the trunk. All participants are to remain inside their vehicles and not to manipulate firearms at the event. We offer $100 per handgun, rifle, or shot gun, and $200 per assault weapon, ghost gun, or similarly classified firearm. Final amount per firearm to be determined by Fremont Police. Each individual is limited to $600 buyback total. To be eligible for buyback, firearms must be operational. Non-operative firearms can be turned in without buyback.

This year marks two years since the first COVID-19 vaccine was administered in the U.S. In Alameda County, more than 86% of residents have been successfully fully vaccinated. Vaccinations helped prevent millions of hospitalizations and saved millions of lives from the pandemic. Continue to stay up to date on vaccines to protect yourself and your loved ones against COVID-19. Learn more on the Alameda County Health Care Services Agency COVID-19 website.
Take steps to lower the risk of becoming infected or spreading viruses. As we go back to work or school after the holidays or traveling, protect yourself and loved ones against flu, COVID-19, and other respiratory viruses which continue circulating across Alameda County. Consider the following:

The flu vaccine and COVID-19 updated boosters can safely be given at the same time and Alameda County's Health Care Services Agency strongly encourages everyone eligible to get their doses now.
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone ages 6 months and older receive a yearly flu vaccine.
- If your last COVID-19 vaccine dose was before September 2022 (October 2022 for kids 6 months to 11 years), you need an updated vaccine to help protect against Omicron.
- The flu vaccine and the COVID-19 booster can safely be given at the same time, and at different times. It can take up to two weeks for the vaccines to be fully effective.
- The flu vaccine is available through home Alameda County’s Home Vaccination program. The at-home flu vaccine will be offered to people also receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
- Many pharmacies accept most insurance, including Medi-Cal. Schedule a vaccination at vaccines.gov/find-vaccines or https://myturn.ca.gov.
Whether or not you have symptoms, if you test positive you are positive for COVID-19. Follow isolation instructions and learn if treatment is right for you (treatment in pill form must be started within 5 days of symptoms starting). Contact your health care provider right away. If you can’t reach them or if you do not have a health care provider, a free telehealth service is available for all Californians through Sesame Care: Call (833) 686-5051 (6:00 am to 3:00 pm, 7 days a week) or make an appointment online. If you have symptoms, but test negative on a rapid test, isolate and test again in 24-48 hours or get a confirmatory PCR test.
