City Manager Proclaims Local Emergency in Response to Recent Weather Events
FREMONT, Calif. – January 10, 2023 – On Monday, January 9, 2023, City Manager Karena Shackelford signed a local emergency proclamation, in response to recent weather events, including torrential rains, flooding, and high winds that have impacted the City of Fremont. The proclamation will be heard for ratification tonight during the regularly scheduled Council meeting at 7 p.m. at Fremont City Hall, 3300 Capitol Ave.
The emergency proclamation gives the City legal authority and flexibility to mobilize resources in response to the ongoing weather events that have impacted Fremont. The action will also help ensure critical services and operations continue.
The City’s Public Works department has reported that approximately 14,000 sandbags and over 275 tons of sand have been distributed to City residents since New Year’s Eve and the City’s Community Services department has responded to more than 50 downed trees. Many trees throughout the city remain vulnerable due to saturated soils. The City activated its Emergency Operations Center to enhance coordination among City agencies and other local partners and the City’s Office of Emergency Services continues to actively monitor the weather situation.
“City departments have been working diligently and proactively in response to the storms and we’re hopeful that State and Federal disaster assistance funding will be made available, to help offset the cost of the City’s response,” said City Manager Karena Shackelford. While no disaster assistance funding has yet been authorized to cities in Alameda County, according to the City’s Office of Emergency Services, the Sheriff, Governor, and President have also declared emergencies in response to the recent storms.
