The City of Fremont has a long history of flooding dating back to the 1950’s. With the current winter storms that have wreaked havoc across our region, please make sure you and your family are prepared.
The City has developed a storm response plan to be as prepared as possible and over the years has effectively managed storms of all sizes--with the most recent ones hitting on New Year's Eve and January 4-5. City staff will continue to closely monitor all severe weather events as they unfold—adjusting staffing levels, emergency response, and public messaging accordingly. The City Manager’s Office in coordination with the Fremont Police Department and Fremont Fire Department Public Information Officers will continue to provide our community with general information and safety messages throughout the winter storm season.
For a comprehensive online resource, please visit our Storm Updates Webpage. The page contains helpful information for our community about the City's Emergency Storm Shelter for those in need (opened on January 4 and will remain open until Friday, January 6 in the morning); who to call to report issues during a storm; road closures; sandbag pick-up locations; what to do before, during, and after a flood; guidance on how to sign up to receive up-to-date alerts; and much more!
City Council Meetings and City Commission Meetings Now Open to the Public
In compliance with new State law (AB 2449), all City Council and City Commission meetings are now being held in person. Beginning January 10, City Council meetings will be open to the public to attend in-person or virtually via Zoom. Zoom instructions will continue to be posted on Council meeting agendas. City Commission meetings will only be available in person.
Members of the public wishing to participate in City Council meetings in person are strongly encouraged to wear masks and seating capacity will remain limited in the Council Chambers to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses impacting our community. The City will continue to monitor public health conditions and associated regulations and will take necessary action to comply with any future health orders.
To view the dates and times of upcoming meetings, please visit our online calendar.
We look forward to seeing you in the new year!
The City is nearing completion of the Housing Element update process for Fremont. The Housing Element is an eight-year plan to meet the housing needs of everyone in the community. Under State law, all local governments in California are required to adopt a Housing Element as part of their General Plan and update it every eight years.
On December 22, 2022, the City's Planning Commission reviewed the Adoption Draft of the 2023-2031 Housing Element and voted unanimously to recommend adoption to the Fremont City Council. In making their recommendation, the Commission incorporated several minor amendments to the draft, including adding responses to recent public comments and making clarifications. The Adoption Draft of the Housing Element has been updated to reflect those amendments.
Next, the City Council will consider adoption of the 2023-2031 Housing Element at their regularly scheduled meeting on January 10, 2023 at 7:00 pm in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 3300 Capitol Avenue. The meeting will also be held virtually via Zoom. The agenda will be available online at least three days before the meeting at city.fremont.gov/agendacenter. It will include instructions on how to provide public comment and participate.

Republic Services is offering free curbside Christmas tree collection from Monday, January 2 – Friday, January 13. Single-family homes can place their Christmas trees less than six feet tall in the gutter on their collection day. Larger trees can be cut in half and placed in the gutter or cut into pieces and placed in the green compost cart with the lid closed. A friendly reminder that trees are only compostable if they are free of all decorations, tinsel, nails, and tree stands.
For those living in a multi-family complex, contact your property manager or homeowners association representative to coordinate with Republic Services to request a debris box or pickup day. Republic Services also offers a drop-off location at 42600 Boyce Road from Tuesday, December 27 – Friday, January 20. Compostable trees may be dropped off for free, while non-compostable trees may be dropped off for a $5 charge. Christmas trees can also be collected as part of a bulky goods pickup that can be scheduled via the Republic Services website or by calling 510-657-3500.
