Daylight Savings Time to End Sunday
This weekend when you 'fall back,' remember to 'Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery.' Be sure to check and change your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide batteries to ensure they are working properly. By gaining one hour, we also lose some daylight. Studies show there’s a spike in car accidents at the start of daylight savings time due to disrupted sleep patterns and darker roadway conditions for a longer part of the day. Please avoid driving when tired and look out for crossing pedestrians or cyclists. Wear high visibility clothing, reflective materials or lights when walking or biking on the street, especially after sunset.
Additionally, the Fremont Fire Department has a team of volunteers who will install free, standard smoke alarms in the homes of older adults and low-income and physically challenged individuals. Many of the smoke detectors are donated by local businesses and organizations. For members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, volunteers also install specialized visual smoke alarms which were purchased with federal grant funds. Learn more.
For any smoke detectors and batteries you need to swap out, please remember to drop them off for free at the local Household Hazardous Waste facility, located at 41149 Boyce Rd. in Fremont.
 Smart Parking Comes to Centerville
Finding a parking space in Centerville just got easier this week with the activation of new real-time parking guidance signs installed along Fremont Boulevard and Peralta Boulevard. At the two parking lots next to the Centerville Train Depot, signs now display the number of spaces available at each parking lot to help direct patrons to the appropriate parking lot based on parking space availability.
The dynamic parking signs are installed as part of the City’s Fremont Boulevard Safe/Smart Corridor Project, which also installs new traffic signal technology equipment and fiber optic communication lines along Fremont Boulevard between the two Fremont Boulevard/Interstate 880 interchanges. The objective of the project is to implement advanced traffic operation and smart city technologies throughout the corridor to make driving, walking, bicycling, and use of transit safer and more convenient. The installed equipment will also set up the Fremont Boulevard corridor to accommodate future connected vehicle technologies. The project is funded by an innovation grant obtained from the Alameda County Transportation Commission.

Following the success of Fremont’s Earn & Learn program, Ohlone College has partnered with Tesla to launch the company’s Manufacturing Development Program (MDP) in Fremont. Under this program, students who sign up will be onboarded by Tesla and then enrolled at Ohlone College in the Smart Manufacturing Technology (SMTech) program, where they will receive a certificate of achievement in SMTech that is condensed from two semesters into 10 weeks of intensive instruction. With the Fremont MDP program, Tesla is not only covering the cost of tuition but also paying hourly wages for students while they undergo instruction. Upon completion, program graduates will be offered full-time employment at Tesla with benefits and stock options. The first cohort of 15 students is already underway and will complete the program on December 9, 2022.
Additionally, this week Ohlone College and our Economic Development Department also launched their third cohort of their banner workforce development program, Fremont Earn & Learn. Program curriculum—which includes fundamentals of Industry 4.0, Material Handling, Blueprint Reading, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and Safety in Industry, has been developed in partnership with Bloom Energy and an industry advisory group and will supplement on-the-job training provided by the company. Reflecting Fremont’s diversity, this cohort will include people of different ages, cultures, and backgrounds, including refugees and dislocated workers from the hospitality industry.
If you are an employer interested in participating in a future cohort, please reach out to Dr. Rose-Margaret Itua from Ohlone College by email or contact City staff.
