Fremont Ranks as one of the Top 20 Safest Cities in the U.S.
Fremont was recently ranked the 17th safest place to live in America, and the only California city in the Top 20 spot by WalletHub. The WalletHub study was based on data from more than 180 cities across 42 key indicators of safety in three key dimensions: Home & Community Safety, Natural-Disaster Risk, and Financial Safety. This significant achievement is a direct result of our valued partnership with the Fremont community. We thank the community for their efforts each and every day that contribute to the safety of our city!
National Fire Prevention Week
Make a home fire escape plan with your loved ones today!
During the week of October 9-15, 2022, the National Fire Protection Association is leading fire departments across the nation in promoting this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape”, which works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires.
The Fremont Fire Department encourages all residents to embrace the 2022 Fire Prevention Week theme and adopt these important home fire escape planning tips:
- Make sure your plan meets the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
- Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound.
- Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.
- Have an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home where everyone should meet.
- Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in the household, including guests. Practice at least once during the day and at night.
At next week’s City Council meeting on October 18, 2022, which begins at 7:00 pm, the Council will hear a presentation by City staff on the following items:
- Fiscal Year 2021/22 Year-End Report and 2022/23 Budget Update: Presentation of Year-End Results for FY 2021/22 and Recommended Fund Balance Allocation; Update on Revenue and Expenditure Estimates for FY 2022/23
- Homelessness Mitigation and Response - Receive Staff Report Responding to Council Referral to Research and Detail Homelessness Mitigation Strategies and Practices

As part of the City’s Fremont Boulevard Safe/Smart Corridor Project, the City’s contractor is in the process of installing 26 new radar speed feedback/dynamic message signs along both directions of travel along Fremont Boulevard, between the Interstate 880/Fremont Boulevard interchange (north) and the Interstate 880/Fremont Boulevard interchange (south). The new signs are noticeably larger than the standard radar speed feedback signs installed elsewhere in the City, and the larger signs can operate both as radar speed feedback signs during normal operation for traffic calming purposes, as well as display custom messages to support temporary traffic control, traffic detour, and incident management purposes along the corridor. The signs’ dynamic message feature is important for this section of Fremont Boulevard, as the corridor is often used as a bypass route for regional traffic during times of heavy congestion along the I-880 freeway corridor or during a major incident event on the I-880 freeway.
The Fremont Boulevard Safe/Smart Corridor Project is funded through an $8.3 million Countywide Measure BB transportation grant awarded by the Alameda County Transportation Commission, and it is on schedule to be substantially completed by the end of 2022.
For more project related information, please visit the project website or contact Eric Hu, Principal Transportation Engineer, by email.
In April 2022, the City Council adopted new Council District boundaries for Fremont’s six districts. The new districts adopted were effective immediately, however, will become operative for the November 2022 election and ten years after. Until the November 2022 election, current Councilmembers will maintain their representation of district boundaries and constituents under the district-based map adopted in 2018. The newly adopted 2022 Council District Map hosts minor changes to Districts 2, 3, 4, and 6, while no changes were made to district boundary lines of Districts 1 and 5. Councilmembers will continue to serve under the same election cycle with Council Districts 2, 3, and 4 being up for election in November 2022, while Districts 1, 5, and 6 are up for election in 2024. The City is in the process of creating a short-term rental (STR) ordinance for Fremont. An STR refers to an activity in which a “host” agrees to rent out all or a portion of a residential unit to a “guest” for less than 30 consecutive nights. The new ordinance would continue to allow STRs to operate in Fremont but would adopt regulations that fit the characteristics of the city and preserve community character.
At this time, the City is looking for public feedback on STRs. A survey and online forum are available on MyFremont, the City’s new community engagement platform. In addition, a virtual community meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 19 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Anyone interested in learning more about STRs and providing feedback can attend this meeting. The feedback received will help inform concerns and interests related to STRs and the contents of the new ordinance.

- Residents should plan now for how they may access treatment if they test positive.
- If a resident hasn't heard from their doctor, they can utilize one of the State-supported options. Contact the County's Community Support Team if help is needed: 510-268-2101, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Alameda County residents can schedule appointments with health care providers and major pharmacies to receive the free COVID-19 updated booster vaccinations.
- Updated Moderna boosters are for individuals 18 years of age and older.
- Pfizer-BioNTech updated boosters are for individuals 12 years of age and older.
