In partnership with the Better Block Foundation, the City will begin the temporary transformation of Ellsworth Street in historic Mission San Jose. Over the next few months, the Mission San Jose community will reimagine Ellsworth Street as a lively, safe, and welcoming neighborhood space and thriving commercial district for all ages and backgrounds. This community-led vision will culminate in a two-day placemaking event in September 2022 that will help residents get creative with their public space.
While the two-day event will take place in September, the vision starts now with YOU. Your opinion as a community member matters and will directly shape the transformation of Ellsworth Street! Join us for the virtual Community Kickoff Meeting on Monday, May 9 at 6:00 -7:00 pm and share your vision for a thriving Mission San Jose.
Whether or not you can attend the Kickoff, we encourage you to complete our survey. This will give us a better idea of what kind of activities, events, and atmosphere you’d like to see in the Mission San Jose district. Farmers markets? A dog park? More mom and pop restaurants? Share your vision with us!

To celebrate the art, creativity, and resiliency of Fremont students, the City’s Human Services Department, Youth and Family Services Division in partnership with Fremont Unified School District, hosted the 5th annual Children Mental Health Awareness Art Competition to celebrate national Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day.
For this year’s competition, the City also launched a video as part of Youth and Family Services’ Motivate Café series about mental health awareness. The video spotlights the work submitted by students and includes personal interviews with the winners of the competition.
The City received nearly 100 submissions to the competition from Fremont Unified School District students. Digital media entries and poetry were accepted in addition to traditional art mediums. The theme was “My Courage and Strength.” The event was generously supported by Kaiser Permanente and the Fremont Olive Hyde Art Guild, and other individual community donors.
For more information about the event, please call the City of Fremont Youth and Family Services Division at 510-574-2100.

Over the past five years, the City of Fremont has reached a 45% reduction in fatalities and severe injuries caused by traffic crashes. This remarkable safety accomplishment was achieved through hard work, leadership, and diligent investment in safety infrastructure and programs.
Recently, the Institute of Transportation Engineers’ ITE Journal detailed Fremont's Vision Zero initiatives that led to this significant traffic safety progress, including creating Complete Streets and safer pedestrian crossings, converting to LED streetlights, encouraging non-auto modes of travel, and maintaining roadways. In addition, traffic enforcement officers and engineers closely collaborate on a monthly basis by reviewing information around how, where, and why major crashes are occurring in our community.
We encourage residents to read the full article to learn how the City is continuously working to improve traffic safety in Fremont.
