Alameda County continues to prioritize testing resources to highly impacted neighborhoods and communities of color. Free testing is available, regardless of insurance or documentation status, at all County-supported community testing sites, including stationary and mobile/pop-ups. Residents should visit the County’s website for more information about locations. Many of the community testing sites are adding rapid testing access too. Resident can check in with the site through their registration portal to get the latest information. Appointments are encouraged and walk-ins are accepted. No matter the vaccination status, if an individual feels sick or tests positive, they should stay home. If they are exposed to COVID, they should test.
Alameda County health officials are monitoring COVID cases closely. The County is not observing a dramatic rise in cases as seen during the Omicron surge, and the increase may be slowing compared to what was observed in early April. Hospitalizations are stable at levels approaching what we saw before the surge. Alameda County and the State continue to strongly recommend wearing a mask in indoor public settings, including public transit and transit hubs. The County is not planning to implement additional public health requirements at this time.
Vaccine and boosters are proven to provide strong protection against severe illness due to infection. COVID will have a presence in our lives for a long time. Consider how much risk you are willing to take and how infection may impact you and those you live or interact with regularly before engaging in higher risk activities.
COVID-19 vaccines help protect adults and children ages 5 years and older from getting sick or severely ill with COVID-19.
- Dr. Nicholas Moss, Alameda County Health Officer, discusses the importance of vaccination in this new video message.
- Everyone ages 5 years and older should get a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as they can.
- To get the most protection, get all recommended doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. Take all precautions until you are up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations.
- Everyone ages 12 years and older can get a booster shot either 5 months after their initial Pfizer or Moderna series, or 2 months after their initial Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
- Everyone ages 50 and older, persons with immunocompromising conditions ages 12 and older, and those who got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine may receive a second booster shot 4 months after their first booster.
There are medications available to treat COVID-19, including the Omicron variant and BA.2. You may be eligible for a COVID-19 treatment if you recently tested positive for COVID and are at high risk of developing serious illness from COVID-19, even if you only have mild or moderate symptoms. Medications are available at major chain pharmacies but require a prescription. Contact your health care provider as soon as you test positive as these drugs must be used within five days of symptoms starting. Don’t wait to see if your symptoms get worse. Additionally, if you are immunocompromised or cannot get a COVID-19 vaccine due to a prior severe adverse reaction to the vaccine, you may be eligible for a preventative treatment that will reduce your chances of becoming infected with COVID-19.
