City to Offer Seagate STEM Winter Camp Scholarships
The City of Fremont Recreation Services Division is pleased to offer the Seagate STEM Winter Camp Scholarship to qualifying Fremont families for school break camps. The Seagate Winter Camp STEM Scholarship will provide an opportunity for students to participate in STEM camp offerings during school breaks in winter for a total of $10,000 in scholarship funding. Through Seagate’s generous donation, youth will have an opportunity to participate and learn about science, technology, engineering, and math through Recreation’s creative camp programs.
Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $199 to those registering for a STEM-based camp and meeting the scholarship requirements. The scholarship amount will allow a full scholarship for the 3-day camps and partial scholarship for the week-long winter as well as for the higher fee contracted programs such as Mad Science and PlayWell.
Scholarships are made possible by the Recreation Services Division and corporate and individual donations. For sponsorship opportunities, contact Lance Scheetz at 510-494-4331 or email.
The City is pleased to announce a new leadership opportunity for Fremont students who care about the environment and want to be prepared for disaster, save money and resources, and create a healthier and brighter future for Fremont. Through the City’s Fremont Green Challenge, Fremont's new Climate Solutions Ambassador Program is for students ages 16+ who care about climate change and want to act but don’t know where to start. Students will form teams and be provided with the tools and training they need to learn more about climate change and work together to reduce emissions, save water and money, and make Fremont more resilient. This program is open to all Fremont residents ages 16 to 22. Those who participate will have the opportunity to gain meaningful leadership and volunteering experience that will look great on college and job applications. The program will only require about one hour of time per week from January through June.
Students who want to learn more about the program before signing up can attend a 30-minute virtual information session in January. Several dates are available for students to sign up to attend an info session.
The Climate Solutions Ambassador Program is part of the Fremont Green Challenge, a City platform with the goal of empowering residents to take action together to reduce emissions and help meet the City’s climate action goals. Community Climate Solutions is the City’s partner for the Fremont Green Challenge and will be facilitating the program.

Alameda County identified five mildly symptomatic COVID-19 cases involving the Omicron variant among 12 local COVID-19 cases to date. All 12 individuals were vaccinated, most had received boosters, they are mildly symptomatic, and no one has been hospitalized.
Residents should continue using precautions proven to prevent the spread of COVID-19:
- Get vaccinated and if due, get a booster
- Wear masks
- Stay home when sick
- Wash hands
- Avoid crowded and poorly ventilated
Public health officials continue to be vigilant and are monitoring evidence of this variant’s transmissibility and the severity of illness resulting from infection. The County reminds residents that vaccination continues to provide the best protection against severe illness from COVID-19 that could result in hospitalization and death.
Alameda County residents are urged to follow the State’s guidance to prevent spreading COVID- 19 this holiday season. Last year we saw a significant winter surge and we must remain vigilant to keep our trend moving downward. The COVID-19 safety precautions will also protect against the flu:
-
Get vaccinated including a booster shot if you’re eligible.
- Stay home if you’re experiencing COVID-19 related symptoms (sore throat, cough, runny nose), isolate yourself from others, and get tested.
-
Get tested before and after traveling or gathering during the holidays, 1 to 3 days before leaving and 3 to 5 days after returning from traveling.
- If members of your group are unvaccinated, take precautions like keeping your gathering small, short, and outdoors, and continue to wear a mask.
- Remember, flu shots are recommended for everyone 6 months and older.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently updated guidance to address new requirements for international air travel to the United States. As of December 6, all air passengers, regardless of vaccination status, must show a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 1 day before travel to the United States. The CDC posted a quick reference guide for travel to the U.S. along with guidance for activities, gatherings, and holidays. The CDC also offers a COVID-19 travel recommendations by destination.
The Alameda County COVID-19 dashboard now uses the county’s full population as the denominator to calculate rates including vaccination and cases. Alameda County initially calculated rates using our 16 and older population to coincide with eligibility, then added ages to 12 and older when this cohort became eligible. Moving to full population adds another ~244,500 to include ages 0 to 11 and will result in lower percentages than recently reported as rates adjust to the increase in denominator.
