At the regularly scheduled City Council meeting on September 7, the Fremont City Council voted unanimously to adopt the proposed Trails Strategy Plan, which provides an overarching framework for implementing future trail projects in Fremont. The plan envisions more than doubling the City’s trail network from 61 miles to 140 miles over the next 30 years. The plan also identifies 12 projects as near-term priorities over the next decade. The Plan was prepared in coordination with a new Parks and Recreation Master Plan which identified building more paved trails as a top priority to the community. Other community input was obtained through survey, focus groups, and meetings with the City’s Mobility Commission and Recreation Commission. Active projects already underway include Niles Canyon Trail, East Bay Greenway, Dumbarton to Quarry Lakes Trail, Sabercat Trail Extension, Grimmer Greenway, and Kato Road Complete Streets.
The Fremont City Council received an update of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan at their regularly scheduled Council meeting on September 7. The presentation encompassed progress on the project, picking up where the previous update left off, including benchmarking against peer cities, prioritizing investments for City facilities and programs, assessing City programs, and mapping to better provide equitable levels of service. The combined data will inform and guide the Parks and Recreation Master Plan on how to meet the demands for future recreational, programming, environmental, and maintenance needs, as well as to establish priorities and funding strategies for facility improvements, future park and trail development, and land acquisition.
This week, Verizon deployed 5G Home Internet and 5G Ultra Wideband for customers in Fremont. As alternatives to cable internet, these services offer fast, reliable wireless connectivity to help those working from home or e-learning for residents. This 5G deployment is the first of many steps to improve connectivity and build a robust, citywide network that enables advanced technology such as state-of-the-art remote surgical procedures, smart city infrastructure, and truly autonomous vehicles.

The full closure of State Route 84 in Niles Canyon for work on the Alameda Creek Bridge is pushed back to late October. The City will share updated closure details when available.
Alameda County is evaluating policies requiring vaccine verification at bars and restaurants. The County will monitor how these policies roll out in the City of Berkeley, San Francisco, and New York City. While vaccination continues to be the best protection against severe illness, vaccinated people may also spread the virus that causes COVID-19. Businesses can choose to implement vaccination verification systems to better protect their workers and patrons. Employers must also continue to comply with other state requirements like Cal/OSHA’s Emergency Temporary Standards and the State’s recent Orders requiring vaccination, or vaccination verification or masking/regular testing for certain settings.
