Fremont firefighters continue to actively support mutual aid efforts throughout the state and nation.
This week, five firefighters were deployed as part of the California/Federal Emergency Management Agency Urban Search & Rescue Task Force 4 activation to enhance search and rescue capacity in response to Hurricane Ida. The Task Force includes personnel from 14 different agencies and is comprised of 46 members.
Four Fremont firefighters remain deployed at the Dixie Fire as part of California Office of Emergency Services (CAL OES) Strike Team 2870C, with personnel from the Hayward, Oakland, and Alameda County fire departments. Strike Team 2870C has been deployed at the Dixie Fire since July 25. Since the initial deployment, FFD personnel swaps have taken place every 21 days. Two additional firefighters are also deployed at the Dixie Fire serving as a Strike Team Leader and Strike Team Leader Trainee of CAL OES Strike Team 3800A with personnel from the Linda Fire Protection District, and Patterson, Quincy, Willow, and Yuba City Fire Departments.
Located within Butte and Plumas Counties, the Dixie Fire has been active for more than 50 days and is over 859,457 acres. More information about the fire.
Two firefighters are also deployed at the Monument Fire, serving as the Strike Team Leader and Strike Team Leader Trainee of CAL OES Strike Team 2800A with personnel from the Mountain View, San Francisco, Alameda, Napa City, and Benicia Fire Departments.
While a total of 13 firefighters are deployed at the Dixie Fire, Monument Fire, and as part of the Hurricane Ida response efforts, all Fremont fire stations remain fully staffed and ready to respond.

The newly installed West Access Bridge at the Warm Springs/South Fremont BART station is anticipated to open in late Fall. Although the construction phase is substantially complete, remaining electrical and safety work must be completed before the bridge can pass final inspection and open to the public.
Construction of the bridge began in Summer 2018, and what was originally hoped to be complete in Spring 2020, has been delayed due to unforeseen construction challenges. None of the challenges have been too big to overcome, and while over schedule, the project remains on budget and is nearing the finish line. City staff and BART are working with the primary contractor to prioritize the remaining work which includes, but not limited to, integrating the safety, security, electrical, and mechanical systems that tie the West Access Bridge to the Warm Springs/South Fremont BART Station. We anticipate it will take a few months for the remaining work to be completed, tested, and for the bridge to open to the public. We will continue to keep our community informed of the progress.
Public Art Installation for New Warm Springs Plaza
To help welcome visitors to Fremont’s Warm Springs Innovation District and create a space that spurs innovation and creativity, a public art installation has been planned for the new Warm Springs Plaza adjacent to the Warm Springs/South Fremont BART Station. The Plaza is a 2.3-acre public open space being developed in conjunction with the Warm Springs West Access Bridge. The installation of public art within the Plaza supports the City’s Warm Springs Innovation District Art Program, which was created to foster pedestrian activity and create a draw to the area.
To find an artist to design a unique art installation for the Plaza, the City released a request for qualifications earlier this summer. At a special meeting on August 25, 2021, the City’s Art Review Board reviewed all of the artist submissions and selected five finalists to prepare concept design proposals. This November, the Board will interview the finalists, review their design proposals, and recommend a finalist and an alternate. The Board’s recommendations will then be presented to the City’s Recreation Commission and the Fremont City Council, who will approve the final artist and award the contract. The City will then work with the artist to design and install the artwork in summer/fall 2022. Stay tuned for updates on this project and the Warm Springs Plaza, which will be opening soon!
