The City’s has started developing its Urban Forest Management Plan, a project that kicked off in May 2021 with a presentation to the City’s Recreation Commission. The project will run through Spring 2022 and includes a series of meetings, community dialogues, and online surveys to gather feedback. Take our second survey and provide input on “what we want” for our Urban Forest. This second survey builds on the previous one, which gathered viewpoints and perceptions as related to urban forest conditions, management, and benefits for an understanding of “what we have.” We all benefit from proper care of the urban forest. Together, we will develop a strategic plan to continue growing a healthy urban forest for current and future residents.

Eager to explore some new hiking trails this summer? Look no further than Sabercat Historical Park, which includes 1.8 miles of out-and-back trail, much of it paved and ADA accessible, with a dirt path loop at the west end offering more rugged and steep terrain. Pedestrians, bicyclists, and pets on leash are welcome during the park’s open hours from sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Parking is available along Quema Drive, near the Quema Drive and Paseo Padre Parkway entrance. Additionally, there is a small parking lot at the Via Orinda and Castillejo Way entrance with a pit toilet restroom (bring your own hand sanitizer). View a map of the park and its amenities. Interpretive signage along the way describes the fossils found there, the modern-day flora and fauna, and other aspects of the land’s history.
The park could also use your help to manage several restoration sites; volunteers remove invasive plants as well as plant and maintain native species to help stabilize soils and creek banks, filter pollutants, increase native plant diversity, and improve food and shelter for wildlife. No experience is necessary. All ages are welcome, but children under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult who is registered. To learn about upcoming volunteer opportunities, please subscribe to our email newsletter.
Alameda County is experiencing an increase in COVID-19 cases that threatens to exceed the Spring wave seen earlier this year. Hospitalizations are also on the rise. In early June, cases and hospitalizations were at their lowest levels since April 2020. The daily number of cases averaged as low as 28 per day. As of July 7, daily cases are averaging over 70 per day, with over 100 new cases reported on some recent days. New cases are impacting those communities where vaccination rates are lowest, including in priority neighborhoods that have already been hit hardest by COVID-19. Getting COVID-19 can still lead to severe illness, hospitalization, and death for unvaccinated individuals, including youth and young adults. Vaccination is the best protection against severe COVID-19 infection. Check out Alameda County Public Health Department website and their vaccination guidance and resources.
