Affordable Housing Month
May is Affordable Housing Month, and Fremont is celebrating in more ways than one! From a City Council Proclamation and Affordable Housing Ordinance, to groundbreaking events and grand opening celebrations, as well as affordable housing leasing opportunities, we’re shining the spotlight on Fremont. Special thanks to local jurisdictions, non-profit organizations, faith-based groups, community organizations, and many others that continue to build inclusive communities by providing shelter, homes, and support for low-income families, seniors, and those with special needs.
Celebrating Older Americans Month
May is Older Americans Month. The theme for 2021 is “Communities of Strength,” recognizing the resilience and strength older adults have built through their lives. This Older Americans Month, we celebrate the contributions of Shirley Sisk, Executive Director and one of three founding members of the League of Volunteers (LOV), a nonprofit serving the Tri Cities since 1979. Originally founded in response to cuts in library funding, LOV has been providing a free kids summer recreation program to low income children in the Tri City area ever since. Eighty-seven years young, Shirley has always felt compelled to serve her community, leveraging her strength and resilience. As an Age-Friendly city, Fremont builds on the strengths of older adults while seeking to improve older adults’ quality of life by promoting the development of safe, accessible, and vibrant age-friendly environments. Read Fremont’s Age-Friendly Action Plan to learn more about the City’s commitment to older adults. If you know an older adult in the Tri Cities who may be experiencing difficulty managing their lives, call the City’s Senior Infoline at 510-574-2041 to connect them with services. Also, take the Alameda County Survey to Identify Communication Gaps in Older Adult Community and share your feedback.
