UPDATES: Project 57% Complete; Grade Crossings; Bridge Work; Stations; Light Rail Track Installation; Retaining and Sound Walls; Project Update Video

1

As of this month, the Glendora to Pomona project segment is now 57% complete overall. The freight track is fully relocated within the shared corridor, and the light rail track is now more than 50% installed. Reconstruction requiring long-term street closures at the 21 at-grade crossings is nearly complete, and construction of the 19 new or renovated bridges is almost 70% complete. Walls, fencing and train control installation are already nearly 50% complete; and the four new light rail stations are all under construction. Importantly, KPJV remains on budget and on schedule, as they work toward an early-January 2025 project turnover to Metro.

Details on work completed this past month is included below.

Grade Crossings - Fulton Rd. Crossing Reconstruction Nearing Completion

Crews are nearing completion on the reconstruction of the Fulton Rd. crossing in La Verne/Pomona (see photo above), allowing the street to reopen to motorists and pedestrians next week. This is the final full closure required for the Fulton Rd. crossing. Over the past few weeks, crews have installed two new light rail tracks and completed work on the nearby Thompson Creek bridge. Currently, crews are rebuilding the roadway and hardscape before reopening the street. For more information on the closure, click here.

During the Fulton Rd. closure, crews reopened all lanes on Garey Ave. Once Fulton Rd. reopens, crews will resume the lane closures at Garey Ave. through the end of the year for utility work. NOTE: A full closure of Garey Ave. is planned for early 2023 to allow crews to complete the crossing reconstruction work not able to be completed under lane closures. More details will be shared in upcoming E-News Updates.

Other Grade Crossing Closures

At the Foothill Blvd./Grand Ave. intersection in Glendora (see photo above), crews are continuing the closure of Grand Ave. north of Foothill Blvd., while maintaining reconfigured traffic lanes east, west and south of the intersection. This partial closure has been in place since mid-July, allowing crews to expedite completion of the bridge super-structure months earlier than originally planned (more on the bridge below).

Beginning October 29, crews will begin a 12-day nearly-full closure of the intersection to allow crews time to complete the grade crossing reconstruction, as well as complete most of the remaining work on the bridge and remove the supporting falsework. During the closure, all through traffic lanes and left-turn lanes will be closed, and only two of the four right turn movements will be open. For more information on the upcoming closure, click here. Please utilize the detour map in the notice to plan your route and be prepared.

As a reminder, the Bonita Ave./Cataract Ave. intersection in San Dimas (see photo above), although now open to motorists and pedestrians, continues to be under a temporary lane configuration with restricted movements through the end of the year to allow crews to safely complete work on the intersection. For more information on the restrictions, click here.

19 New or Renovated Bridges

Virtually all of the freight bridge work is complete, and crews are nearing completion on the light rail bridge super-structures. Only two are remaining to be completed: the one over Lone Hill Ave., and the one over the intersection of Foothill Blvd. and Grand Ave. (both in the city of Glendora). Below are updates on the four light rail bridges being built over major streets (from west to east); the rest of the 15 now-completed bridges are over channels and washes that intersect the corridor:

As mentioned above, Grand Ave. remains closed north of Foothill Blvd., and the temporary traffic configuration is in place on the other three intersection street segments. This has allowed crews to expedite progress on the new light rail bridge over the Foothill Blvd./Grand Ave. intersection in Glendora, as the bridge is now nearly completed. This past week, crews completed the last major concrete pour for the super-structure (as seen in the photos above), with just a few smaller pours remaining for other elements of the bridge.

Crews have also completed work to strengthen the super-structure. As seen in the photo above, this process involves running steel cables through the super-structure from one end to the other, and then tensioning the cables to help reinforce the integrity of the super-structure and increase its strength.

With the super-structure nearly complete, as mentioned earlier, crews will begin a 12-day closure of the full intersection on October 29 to complete most of the work remaining on the bridge and remove the supporting falsework. The bridge is now on schedule to be completed in early-December, months ahead of the originally planned completion.

To the west and east of the super-structure, crews continue to construct the retaining walls for the west and east approaches to the bridge (see photo above).

The new light rail bridge over Route 66 in Glendora is now complete. Last month, crews utilized back-to-back weekend closures to successfully remove the falsework that was supporting the super-structure while under construction. Once removed, the unique, custom design for the bridge was visible (see photo above).

To the west of the bridge, crews continue to construct the west approach (including building foundations for sound walls that will sit on top of the approach; see photo above). Crews will soon begin work on the east approach.

Lone Hill Ave. Light Rail Bridge

111

To the east, crews continue to construct the retaining walls for the east approach to the bridge, as seen in the photo above. When completed, the east approach will measure 1,200 feet long, ending just west of Gladstone St.

Construction will continue on the Lone Hill Ave. bridge through early 2023, with long-term lane closures and a few days of full street closures ahead. To learn more, click here.

Bonita Ave./Cataract Ave. Light Rail Bridge

The new light rail bridge over the Bonita Ave./Cataract Ave. intersection in San Dimas was the first amongst the four major bridges to be completed, as seen in the photo above. Work continues on the west and east approaches to the bridge. As seen in the photos below, crews have now constructed the retaining walls for both approaches up to the bridge itself, and continue to install the custom form panels that make up the approach walls.
