Project Nears 50% Completion

Next month, the 9.1-mile, four-station project segment from Glendora to Pomona will reach 50% completion. Major construction started in July 2020 and is on schedule to be completed in early 2025. Reaching 50% completion is a major construction milestone, so stay tuned for that announcement. In the meantime, read on for details of what the team accomplished this past month.

Grade Crossings Updates - Two More Crossings Reopen

In the past month, crews completed major reconstruction and reopened two more grade crossings: White Ave. in La Verne (reopened April 30) and San Dimas Ave. in San Dimas (reopened May 6).

At both crossings, crews installed two new light rail tracks and the relocated freight track; completed extensive underground utility work; installed a host of other safety improvements; and finished the work necessary to reopen the streets, including reconstructing the roadway, curbs and gutters, and adding new medians.

NOTE: Crews will return to the San Dimas Ave. crossing in the future to complete the roadway improvements and medians north and south of the corridor, requiring a two-week full closure of the street.

Ongoing Crossing Work:

Work continues at various grade crossings on the project this month – at the Foothill Blvd./Grand Ave. intersection (click here for notice) in Glendora, Cataract Ave. (click here for notice) in San Dimas, San Dimas Canyon Rd. (click here for notice) in San Dimas/La Verne and Garey Ave. (click here for notice) in Pomona.

At the Foothill Blvd./Grand Ave. intersection, crews have implemented a long-term reconfiguration of the traffic lanes on both streets (see photo above). This is to allow traffic to be maintained in all directions while work continues on the future light rail bridge that is being built over the intersection (including the installation of the falsework; more on the bridge below). The lane reconfiguration will continue through December 2022. NOTE: A full closure of the intersection will be needed later this year, and a notice will be distributed ahead of that closure.

On May 9, crews began reconstructing the San Dimas Canyon Rd. crossing. This work follows a short, two-week closure that took place in late 2021, during which crews relocated the freight track through the crossing. Now, crews will use this longer closure to install the two new light rail tracks; relocate and protect underground utilities; construct a new right turn pocket from westbound Arrow Hwy. to northbound San Dimas Canyon Rd.; rebuild the roadway, curbs, gutters and sidewalks; and add new medians and other safety infrastructure. The full closure of the street will continue through October.

At Garey Ave. in Pomona, crews are currently protecting existing underground utilities, as seen in the photo above. As part of this work, crews have implemented single lane closures on Garey Ave. at the railroad crossing, which will continue through the end of the year. A full closure of Garey Ave. is needed to complete the crossing reconstruction, but that work has not yet been scheduled.

Upcoming Crossing Work:

Upcoming closures are scheduled at Route 66 in Glendora, Bonita Ave./Cataract Ave. intersection in San Dimas and at the E St. crossing in La Verne.

This Thursday evening, June 2, Route 66 between Hunters Trail and Compromise Line Rd. in Glendora will be fully closed to all traffic (vehicular and pedestrian) for nighttime work that will continue until 5:00 AM on Friday morning (June 3). This one-night only full closure is needed to place concrete for the Route 66 light rail bridge (click here for notice).

A few days later, on Monday, June 6, crews will return to the E St. grade crossing (north of Arrow Hwy.) in La Verne to complete the crossing reconstruction work. Crews will complete the installation of a second light rail track, build a new right turn pocket from westbound Arrow Hwy. to northbound E St., add new medians and other safety improvements; and rebuild the roadway, curbs and gutters. This work requires a full closure of E St. at the railroad crossing for approximately two weeks. Crews removed and relocated the freight track, installed one light rail track and completed utility work during a four-month closure in Spring 2021. For more information on this upcoming closure, click here.

Finally, on Monday, June 13, crews are expected to begin the final phase of the four-phase reconfiguration of the Bonita Ave./Cataract Ave. intersection in San Dimas, requiring a full closure of the intersection for two months. During this phase, crews will complete the underground utility work; rebuild the roadway, curbs and gutters; add new medians; rebuild the relocated freight track; and continue work on the new light rail bridge (more on the bridge below). More information on this closure will be sent out soon.

Construction of New Light Rail Bridges Over Major Streets

Of the 19 bridges being built new or renovated as part of the project, four are new light rail bridges over major streets. Three of these four new light rail bridges are in Glendora at the Foothill Blvd./Grand Ave. intersection, Route 66 and Lone Hill Ave.; the fourth bridge is in San Dimas at the Bonita Ave./Cataract Ave. intersection. Each is required by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to improve safety for both the new light rail system and city streets. Below are updates on all of them (from west to east):

Foothill Blvd./Grand Ave. Light Rail Bridge

1

As mentioned above, crews earlier this month implemented a long-term reconfiguration of the traffic lanes near the Foothill Blvd./Grand Ave. intersection in Glendora to allow traffic to be maintained in all directions while work continues on the future light rail bridge. With the traffic reconfiguration fully in place (set to continue through December 2022), crews are now getting ready to install the falsework (the temporary support for the super-structure as it is built across the street). Currently, crews are assembling the falsework ahead of the installation, as seen in the photo above.

Crews have completed the falsework installation for the new light rail bridge over Route 66 in Glendora and are now constructing the super-structure (see photos above). Currently, crews are installing rebar and forms for the internal portion of the super-structure. When this work is completed, crews will then place concrete, which will require a full nighttime closure of Route 66 between Hunters Trail and Compromise Line Rd. this Thursday night, June 2. For more information on the full nighttime closure, click here.

In addition, the nightly intermittent lane or bi-directional closures of Route 66 will continue through September. For more information, click here.

As seen in the photo above, crews continue to make progress constructing the retaining walls for the west approach to the bridge. The west approach will measure approximately 400 feet in length and consist of custom form panels that feature the project’s citrus design.

For more information on the future light rail bridge over Route 66, click here.

Lone Hill Ave. Light Rail Bridge

1

Additionally, crews are making good progress on the falsework installation across Lone Hill Ave. (see photos above). The falsework is the temporary support for the super-structure as it is built across the street. With most of the supports in place, crews are preparing the steel beams to be installed over the supports (see photo below).

1

Photo: Crews preparing falsework pieces to be installed over Lone Hill Ave.

Because the Lone Hill Ave. bridge will be the largest bridge on the 9.1-mile project from Glendora to Pomona (when completed, the bridge will span 344 feet from abutment to abutment), the falsework installation definitely makes a big impression as you travel along Lone Hill Ave. For safety and traffic, the falsework beams are being installed at night only.

Construction will continue on the Lone Hill Ave. bridge through the end of 2022, with long-term lane closures and a few days of full street closures ahead. To learn more, click here.

Bonita Ave./Cataract Ave. Light Rail Bridge

The Bonita Ave./Cataract Ave. super-structure is nearing completion. Crews have now begun removing the falsework (which was supporting the super-structure as it was built across the intersection). Just as the falsework was carefully assembled and installed piece by piece, it will also be removed and disassembled piece by piece (see photo above).

1

Photo: Crews pouring concrete for the east abutment and end of the super-structure of the new light rail bridge over Bonita Ave./Cataract Ave. intersection

Meanwhile, this past week, crews also completed one of the last remaining concrete pours for the super-structure. This time, crews spent six hours pouring concrete for the east abutment, as seen in the photo above. Crews will later complete the same work on the west abutment.

And on either side of the bridge, work continues on the approaches. To the west, crews have begun constructing the retaining walls of the west approach, which will consist of custom form panels that feature the project’s citrus design (see photo above). To the east, crews are nearing completion on a pedestrian undercrossing at Monte Vista Ave. that will allow people to walk through the east approach in the future to connect to Bonita Ave. The length of the east approach means that the existing railroad crossing at Monte Vista Ave. will need to be permanently closed to vehicular traffic in the future (a date for that closure is not yet finalized). Pedestrians, however, will continue to be able to travel north and south on Monte Vista Ave. after the street is closed by way of this pedestrian undercrossing.

Station Construction Underway

While work has been ongoing at the Glendora and La Verne stations for some time now, crews this week started initial excavation work for the San Dimas station (photos to be provided in the next E-News Update). For now, read on to learn about the current work underway at the Glendora and La Verne stations.

As a reminder, all four stations from Glendora to Pomona will be center platform stations, with a track on each side - one for westbound and one for eastbound trains.

Glendora Station

1

Photo: Glendora station construction underway

Within the corridor between Vermont Ave. and Glendora Ave. in Glendora, crews continue to make progress constructing the platform for the future Glendora station. Most of the concrete pours for the platform have been completed, with just a few more scheduled to take place in the future at both ends. At the ends, crews continue to work on the conduit for the future ticket vending machines and the platform ramps.

La Verne Station

1

Within the corridor between E St. and White Ave. in La Verne, crews have made good progress on the future La Verne station platform. As seen in the photo above, crews recently completed multiple concrete pours for the walls of the platform. With the platform walls completed, crews are now installing rebar and forms for the entrance ramps on both ends of the station platform, as well as installing conduit that will house the communications and power lines for various station equipment (such as security cameras and lighting).

The future La Verne station will be accessible by way of E St., White Ave., Arrow Hwy. and the associated parking facility.

To learn more about the plans for the future stations, see these fact sheets: Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, and Pomona.

Construction of Light Rail Track System

Earlier this month, crews delivered rail sticks (each approximately 980 feet long; see photo above) along this stretch of the corridor, which will later be placed and clipped onto the ties to create the light rail tracks.

Installation of Sound Walls

1

Photos: Crews preparing to install sound wall panels in Glendora

About 28,000 feet of sound walls will be installed from Glendora to Pomona to reduce noise from trains traveling along the corridor for residential and other noise sensitive neighbors. Crews have begun installing the sound wall panels in Glendora and La Verne. The sound wall panels are being fabricated locally, before being delivered for installation.
