In the past two weeks, crews were able to complete the reconstruction of two more grade crossings: Pasadena Ave. in Glendora (completed Monday), and A St. in La Verne (completed March 22). At both crossings, crews installed two new light rail tracks and the relocated freight track; completed extensive underground utility work; installed a host of other safety improvements (at A St., crews also constructed a right turn pocket from westbound Arrow Hwy. to northbound A St.); and finished the work necessary to reopen the street, including reconstructing the roadway, curbs, gutters, new medians and sidewalks (NOTE: at A St., crews still have to install the traffic signals at Arrow Hwy. before pedestrians can walk across.)

Ongoing Crossing Work: Currently, grade crossing reconstruction continues at Cataract Ave. in San Dimas – which is now fully closed north and south of Bonita Ave. through August (click here for notice), San Dimas Ave. in San Dimas (click here for notice), and White Ave. in La Verne (click here for notice).

At these three crossings, crews remain on schedule to complete the work, which includes relocating and protecting underground water, sewer, gas, communications and power lines. Crews will later move on to installing the light rail tracks; installing new safety equipment; rebuilding the roadways, curbs, gutters and sidewalks; and installing new medians.

Looking forward, we expect San Dimas Canyon Rd. (San Dimas/La Verne) to close for reconstruction at the railroad crossing north of Arrow Hwy. for several months starting in early May (following the reopening of White Ave. in La Verne); and reconfiguration of traffic lanes on Foothill Blvd. and Grand Ave. near the intersection will start in late April to allow for construction of the falsework for the bridge. As these activities get closer, notification will be provided to the community and Construction Alerts sent out. To sign up for Construction Alerts, go to www.foothillgoldline.org.

Construction of New Light Rail Bridges Over Major Streets

Nineteen bridges are being built new or renovated as part of the Glendora to Pomona project segment. With the freight bridge work nearly all done, the KPJV structures team is now focused on constructing the various light rail bridges. Like the freight bridges, most of the light rail bridges cross water channels and washes along the corridor - but four are being built to carry light rail trains over major streets.

Three of these four new light rail bridges are in Glendora at the Foothill Blvd./Grand Ave. intersection, Route 66 and Lone Hill Ave.; the fourth bridge is in San Dimas at the Bonita Ave./Cataract Ave. intersection. Each is required by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to improve safety for both the new light rail system and city streets. Below are updates on all of them (from west to east):

Foothill Blvd./Grand Ave. Light Rail Bridge

Crews continue work on the bridge abutments (the supports at the end of the bridge) and the approach ramps that lead up to the bridge (each is about 1,300 feet long) at the intersection of Foothill Blvd./Grand Ave.

Earlier this month, crews completed a seven-hour concrete pour for the east abutment. Once the concrete had cured, crews removed the forms to reveal the abutment’s citrus design pattern (photo above). With the east abutment completed, crews are now installing those same forms for the west abutment (photo above), and will soon be pouring concrete.

Additionally, work continues on the west approach, as seen in the photo above, which has been under construction since last summer. Across the intersection, the east approach for the bridge (photo above) is now starting to take shape as crews construct the retaining walls. The retaining walls for both approaches consist of custom form panels that feature the project’s citrus design.

Once the abutments are complete, crews will build the approaches up to them. At that point, crews will also begin constructing the falsework (the temporary support for the super-structure that will cross the intersection itself). As discussed above, installation of the falsework will require a traffic reconfiguration on Foothill Blvd. and Grand Ave. near the intersection.

Route 66 Light Rail Bridge

With the abutments and center columns now complete, construction of the falsework continues to be underway for the future light rail bridge over Route 66 in Glendora. The falsework is the temporary support for the super-structure that will cross the street itself. As seen in the photo above, crews have installed the falsework over the eastbound lanes on Route 66, and will continue this work until the falsework spans from abutment to abutment.

During the falsework installation and some of the bridge construction, nightly intermittent lane or bi-directional closures of Route 66 between Hunters Trail and Compromise Line Rd. are taking place. This will continue through September. For more information on these nighttime closures, click here.

In addition, crews have now begun constructing the west approach (photo above) for the bridge. The west approach will measure approximately 400 feet in length and consist of custom form panels that feature the project’s citrus design.

As seen in the photo above, the approach between the new light rail bridges over San Dimas Wash (west of Lone Hill Ave.) and Lone Hill Ave. continues to take shape. Crews are constructing the retaining walls for the approach, which consist of custom form panels that feature the project’s citrus design.

Meanwhile, with the west and east abutments completed, construction continues to be underway on the center columns for the future light rail bridge over Lone Hill Ave. As seen in the photos above, crews recently completed work on one column and are nearing completion on the second. Each column requires crews to install steel cages, followed by the installation of custom form panels around the steel cages and placing of concrete, before removing the forms to complete the column and reveal the custom design pattern.

In addition, crews have begun assembling and installing the falsework over Lone Hill Ave. As seen in the photo above, the various elements of the falsework, which includes a combination of steel and wood beams, are currently being assembled on-site and will be installed to span from abutment to abutment.

The Lone Hill Ave. bridge will be the largest bridge on the 9.1-mile project from Glendora to Pomona. When completed, the bridge will span 344 feet from abutment to abutment. The super-structure will have a minimum vertical clearance of 24 feet to allow freight trains to travel underneath. This is the one location between Glendora and Pomona where the freight system will switch from south to north positions in the corridor to continue serving customers. To see what the bridge will look like when completed, click here for a 3D simulation.

Construction will continue on the Lone Hill Ave. bridge through the end of 2022, with long-term lane closures and a few days of full street closures ahead. To learn more, click here.

Bonita Ave./Cataract Ave. Light Rail Bridge

Crews continue to make good progress on the future light rail bridge over the Bonita Ave./Cataract Ave. intersection in San Dimas. As seen in the photos above, crews recently completed concrete pours for the internal portion of the bridge’s super-structure, and are now repeating the same process (installing rebar and forms and then placing concrete) for the deck of the super-structure.

Just to the east of the intersection, crews have begun constructing the east approach for the bridge, as seen in the photo above. Crews are currently constructing the retaining walls for the approach, which consist of custom form panels that feature the project’s citrus design. The east approach will stretch from the bridge to just west of San Dimas Ave.

The length of the east approach means that the railroad crossing at Monte Vista Ave. will later be permanently closed to vehicular traffic. However, pedestrians will be able to travel north and south on Monte Vista Ave. by way of a pedestrian undercrossing, which will allow people to cross through the approach. As seen in the photo above, crews are currently constructing the walls of the pedestrian undercrossing.

Station Construction Underway

Work continues to be underway on the Glendora and La Verne stations. All light rail stations from Glendora to Pomona will be center platform stations with light rail tracks on both sides (one for westbound and one for eastbound light rail trains). Read on for progress on the station construction.

Glendora Station and Parking Facility

1

Within the corridor between Vermont Ave. and Glendora Ave. in Glendora, crews continue to make progress constructing the platform for the future Glendora Station. Currently, crews are constructing the deck for the platform, and have completed the walls for the pedestrian access ramps. The ramp on the west end of the station platform will provide riders access to the station from Vermont Ave.; while the east ramp will connect to the pedestrian undercrossing and provide access from Glendora Ave. and the future station parking facility.

Within the corridor between E St. and White Ave. in La Verne, crews recently completed the installation of the underground conduit that will house the communications and power lines for the light rail system and future La Verne Station. As seen in the photo above, crews are now getting the site ready for the construction of the station platform.

To learn more about the plans for the future stations, see these fact sheets: Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, and Pomona.

Overhead Catenary System

1

Throughout the corridor, crews continue to construct the foundations for the overhead catenary system (OCS) poles that will provide electrical power to the light rail trains via overhead wires. Crews are drilling holes, installing steel cages and placing concrete to complete each foundation for the OCS. Hundreds of these foundations will be constructed from Glendora to Pomona - most about 200 feet apart.

In the future, during the final steps of construction for the light rail system, crews will install poles on top of these foundations that will carry the catenary wires, as well as the rest of the overhead catenary system.
