THEFT FROM MOTOR VEHICLES ON THE RISE | PROTECT YOUR LIVELIHOOD
Theft from motor vehicles was one of the most frequently reported property crimes in June. Many of these thefts involved pickup trucks and work vehicles, which are often targeted because they may contain valuable tools and equipment that can be quickly resold.

While it's not always practical to remove everything from your vehicle, you can reduce your risk by taking a few simple precautions. 

Help Protect Your Vehicle: 

• Park with purpose: Choose well-lit, highly visible areas. If possible, park inside your garage.    
• Lock it every time: Always lock your doors, windows, tailgate, and tool compartments, even if you'll only be away for a few minutes. 
• Upgrade your security: Use heavy-duty locks and secure toolboxes to make theft more difficult.  
• Mark your tools: Etch your name, company logo, or an identification number on valuable equipment to help deter theft and assist recovery.  

Crime Prevention Tip: Keep an inventory of your tools and equipment, including serial numbers, photographs, and purchase receipts. This information can be invaluable if you ever need to report a theft.  

HIDDEN CAMERAS | A GROWING THREAT Criminals are becoming more creative in the way they target homes. In some cases, hidden cameras have been discovered concealed in landscaping to monitor a residence and determine when occupants leave and return. 

While early devices were often hidden inside artificial turf, thieves have recently begun disguising cameras with real plants and foliage, making them even more difficult to detect. 

Help Protect Yourself and Your Property: 

• Illuminate Your Property: Keep entryways, driveways, and the perimeter of your home well-lit to discourage criminal activity. 
• Inspect your landscaping: Periodically check trees, bushes, planters, and other landscaping for hidden devices. 
• Use surveillance: Ensure your home has a functioning video surveillance system and review footage regularly for suspicious activity.  
• Report suspicious items: If you discover a hidden camera or other suspicious device, avoid handling it and contact the El Segundo Police Department.

Vacation Tip: If you will be away from home, request a Vacation Security Check by contacting our dispatch center at 310-524-2760 or by submitting an online request at least one day before departure. This free service is available to El Segundo residents and provides extra patrols of your residence by the El Segundo Volunteers on Patrol program while you are away.
